In a shocking turn of events on Friday evening, Augusta is mourning the loss of a 20-year-old man, Ruben Johnson, who was tragically shot just seconds after posting a Facebook Live video. The incident unfolded at The Jasper apartment complex around 6:55 p.m., leading to a swift police response.
Ruben, an aspiring artist who went by the name “ImStand Onnat Ruben,” captured moments of his life through social media. His last video, just a minute long, showed him rapping and enjoying life. He was lively and full of energy at 6:53 p.m. but was gone just 30 minutes later. According to coroner Mark Bowen, Ruben was rushed to Doctors Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m. His friends, shocked and devastated, quickly took to social media to share their love and condolences, with some expressing anger and calling for justice.
In a swift investigation, authorities arrested 68-year-old Earnest Parkman and 21-year-old Jermaine Williams. They are both charged with murder, home invasion, and weapon possession. Interestingly, Williams was also injured during the gunfight and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries, further complicating the timeline of events. It’s unclear what motivated this violent incident.
According to warrants, the suspects forced their way into Ruben’s residence, where they shot him multiple times. Friends speculate that Ruben may have been trying to protect someone he cared about, often referred to as his “lady,” during the chaotic attack. This raises questions about what could have driven these individuals to such a desperate and violent act.
This heartbreaking event marks Augusta’s 48th homicide of the year, alarmingly surpassing last year’s count of 38 homicides, with still a month to go. Just days earlier, the city faced another tragic incident—a double homicide involving siblings, which heightens the community’s concerns over violence.
Ruben’s friends and family have been sharing his last video as a way to remember the vibrant young man he was. One friend directed some passionate words towards those responsible for his death, mentioning that there would be “slugs” for those who harmed him. His grandmother, Carol Santos, took to social media asking for prayers for the family during this incredibly dark time. The love and support pouring in from the community highlight the impact Ruben had on the lives of those around him.
As the investigation continues, many are left wondering what actions will be taken to prevent further violence in the community. Supporters of Ruben are coming together to raise awareness about the rising homicide rate, hoping to push for crucial conversations around safety and violence in Augusta.
Our hearts go out to Ruben’s family and friends during this difficult time. The loss of a young life is always tragic, and to have it happen in such a shocking way only intensifies the pain felt by the community. We all hope for justice and change, not just for Ruben, but for everyone in Augusta.
