Williamsburg County School District Notes Significant Academic Growth in SC READY and EOCEP Examinations

Williamsburg County School District Celebrates Substantial Academic Improvement on SC READY and EOCEP

The Williamsburg County School District (WCSD) is ringing in a year of notable academic accomplishments after posting impressive scores on the South Carolina READY and End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) state standardized examinations. The South Carolina Department of Education unveiled the statewide scores recently, showcasing the marked success of the WCSD.

The SC READY Results

Administered to students from the third to the eighth grades, the SC READY English Language Arts and Math State Assessment saw the WCSD registering significant gains. The district noted increased numbers of students who met or exceeded the state standards in both subjects, extending from 2023 to 2024.

Highlights of the district’s overall academic performance include:

  • The number of students meeting or exceeding state standards in Elementary English Language Arts (ELA) rose from 32.5% to 40.4%, marking a 7.9% increase. This growth is more impressive in contrast to 2022’s performance at 24.6%.
  • Similarly, Elementary math scores also rose, with scholars who met or exceeded state standards increasing from 24.4% to 33.7% marking a 9.3% growth. Compared with the 2022 percentage at 19.5%, this illustrates a 14.2% increase.
  • In the Middle Level ELA, scores surged from 33.8% to 42.5%, indicating an 8.7% gain. Compared to 2022’s figures at 23.5%, this reflects a remarkable 19% increase over two years.
  • Lastly, Middle Level math scores rose from 12.5% to 15.6%, revealing a 3.1% gain. The 2022 figures stood at a mere 9.5%, making this a 6.1% increase in two years.

EOCEP Successes

High school students sat for the EOCEP assessments in English 2, Algebra 1, Biology 1, and U.S. History and the Constitution. The district recorded an overall increase in the number of students who scored A, B, or C from 2023 to 2024 in Algebra 1, English 2, and Biology 1. Plans are already underway to address the noticed decline in USHC scores.

Some noteworthy highlights from the district’s overall academic performance include:

  • A remarkable increase in Algebra I scholars scoring a “C” or above, skyrocketing from 20.59% to 69.23%.
  • Biology 1 scores indicated that scholars scoring a “C” or above jumped from 13.19% to 33.18%.
  • English 2 scholars scoring a “C” or above shifted from 65.61% to 72.15%.

New Initiatives in 2024-2025

Moving forward, the district plans to maintain its academic stride by implementing several strategies for the 2024-2025 academic year. These include the introduction of new ELA curriculums district-wide, continued implementation of Eureka Math2 for K-8 learners, and individualized learning plans with tools like i-Ready (K – 8) and Exact Path (9 – 10). In addition, the district will also be enhancing professional development opportunities for its educators and implementing innovative educational solutions.

In conclusion, the Williamsburg County School District is not just celebrating its success, but it is also focused on continuous improvement. The district remains committed to ensuring that every student has the necessary support to thrive and excel in their academic pursuits.
