Salley, S.C. has been bustling with some unexpected drama lately, and it’s a story that’s not going to fade away anytime soon! Last Friday, our local law enforcement found themselves embroiled in an almost two-hour chase after Antonio Cheatham, 37, from nearby Aiken, decided that evading arrest sounded like a good idea. It turns out, he had an active bench warrant against him, and he wasn’t about to make things easy for the deputies!
The day began like any other when Aiken County deputies received a tip-off that Cheatham was hiding out at a residence on the 100 block of Inkberry Road. Deputies arrived at the scene, ready to apprehend him, but the people at the house had other plans. When questioned, they kept insisting that Cheatham wasn’t there. Talk about a misleading game of hide-and-seek!
Things took a turn when the Wagener police chief stepped in. After a little more prodding, the individuals at the house admitted that yes, indeed, Cheatham was inside, tucked away in a tiny room. They even allowed the officers to check the place out, which is probably a good thing for them given what happened next!
When deputies searched the residence, they discovered Cheatham hiding behind a stack of laundry hampers, attempting to blend in under a pile of clothes. It seems he underestimated the keen eyes of law enforcement! But upon being found, Cheatham put up a fight, resisting arrest fiercely.
During his transfer, something surprisingly wild happened—while still handcuffed, he managed to make a run for it! Imagine the scene: Cheatham sprinting through backyards, deputies hot on his heels. This wasn’t just any kind of chase; this was more than likely straight out of a movie!
After an hour and a half of pursuit, Aiken County deputies weren’t about to let him slip through their fingers. They called in the cavalry—both a dog team and a drone team joined the search. What a modern, tech-savvy way to catch a fugitive!
Finally, the tireless efforts paid off. Authorities located Cheatham, who was lying low behind some farm equipment. It looks like he hadn’t found quite the right spot to hide after all! With this last-minute twist, he was secured once again and safely transported to the Aiken County Detention Center.
Now that Cheatham is in custody, he’s set to face several charges for his antics. He’s looking at charges for attempted escape, resisting arrest, petit or simple larceny, and driving under suspension. His bench warrant will be served as well, putting him firmly in the grasp of the law.
It’s been a wild ride in Salley, and while we all love a good story, let this serve as a reminder to everyone. Running from the law might seem like an adventure at the moment, but in the end, it’s usually just a one-way ticket to serious trouble!
As this story unfolds, the folks in town will likely be talking about the unexpected chase for quite some time. So here’s hoping the next week brings less drama and more peace to our little community!
