Exciting Voter Registration Event to Kick Off in Augusta
In Augusta, Georgia, the air is buzzing with anticipation as the election season ramps up. Local school leaders are gearing up to ensure that students get a chance to make their voices heard. This month, the student government leaders from Paine College are stepping up to host an engaging voter registration event that’s sure to catch the attention of the student body and the surrounding community.
Engaging the Community
On September 20th, from 1 PM to 3 PM, the “They Not Like Us” themed voter registration event will take place right on the Lion’s lawn at the student activities center. Organizers, led by former Mr. Paine College, Richey Terry, are hopeful to draw in a crowd. The goal? To inform students about the importance of voter registration and engagement in the electoral process.
“We want to shed light on how your vote actually matters,” Richey expressed. He noted that many young people feel disconnected from the political process, often unsure about candidates and the voting process itself. “As I walk around the campus, I talk to a lot of younger students who are uninformed about different candidates and their platforms,” he added. This event aims to bridge that knowledge gap, empowering students to take an active role in shaping their futures.
A Collaborative Effort
The event is part of a larger initiative led by the Black Voters Matter campaign tour, which has made a stop at various HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to boost voter awareness. Richey shared that a nonpartisan organization reached out to his advisor, prompting this collaboration, which, he believes, is vital for bringing important information to the campus community.
This initiative encourages a grassroots effort, seeking support from community organizations and leaders to ensure the event’s success. “We’re hoping to have around 400 plates of food available for everyone,” Richey mentioned excitedly, allowing both students and community members to enjoy some good food while they learn how to register to vote.
Food, Fun, and Registration
The event promises not only to be informative but also fun! Organizers urge attendees to bring friends and come ready to engage in the process of voter registration. Besides the delicious food from food trucks, there will be opportunities to connect with community organizations geared towards making voting easy and accessible.
“It’s not just about the students, but we want everyone in the community to feel included and informed,” Richey reiterated. The effort to encourage participation and educate young voters is seen as essential to driving positive change and ensuring that their voices are represented.
