Community Shines Bright at USC Aiken Winter Gala
On December 5, the city of Aiken lit up with excitement as the USC Aiken Winter Gala celebrated outstanding individuals and organizations that have made a difference in the community. Dressed to impress, guests gathered to honor those who have gone above and beyond in their support of education, music, and community outreach.
Ben Cox Named Distinguished Citizen of the Year
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of Ben Cox as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Mary Driscoll, the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Alumni Affairs, shared heartfelt words praising Cox for his unwavering support of the university’s music program since 2009. Driscoll described Cox as “a forward thinker” who has made a huge impact in shaping the music department.
Cox kicked off the tradition of the annual Winter Nocturne concert, designed to bring talented musicians to campus for the enjoyment of students, faculty, alumni, and the wider community. Thanks to his efforts, acclaimed performers like Irish pianist John O’Conor and the Mendelssohn Piano Trio have graced the stage at USC Aiken.
Mark your calendars! This year’s Winter Nocturne concert will feature pianist Petronel Malan on February 6 at 7 p.m. in the Etherredge Center. Following the concert, attendees will have a delightful opportunity to mingle with the guest artist over cookies and cocoa, hosted by Cox’s wife, Elizabeth.
Bridgestone Americas Recognized as Community Partner of the Year
The evening didn’t stop there! Bridgestone Americas received the Community Partner of the Year award. This tire manufacturing giant, operating near Graniteville since 1998, has made substantial contributions, donating over one million dollars to support USC Aiken. Driscoll highlighted their invaluable partnership, stating that they not only provide financial support but also offer advice on curriculum development.
Taking the stage to accept the award were plant manager Chris Barden and senior human resources manager Monica Key. Key expressed pride in collaborating with USC Aiken, emphasizing the university’s critical role in workforce development and community enhancement.
SteelGate LLC Takes Home Rising Star Award
Another exciting moment of the night was the recognition of SteelGate LLC as the Rising Star of the Year. This up-and-coming cybersecurity firm impressed the audience with their commitment to education, donating a remarkable $75,000 to fund scholarships for students interested in computer science and cybersecurity.
CEO Jack Curran, who accepted the award, was thrilled and somewhat surprised. Curran’s company has made headlines since its establishment in 2019, offering services in cyber operations and becoming a key player in the industry.
Volunteer of the Year: Jack Wetzel
Last but certainly not least, Jack Wetzel was honored as the Volunteer of the Year. Driscoll commended Wetzel for his spirit, determination, and generous donations to the university since 1993. Wetzel has made it a mission to support aspiring students, establishing the Rosamond Durban McDuffie Scholarship Fund and contributing to the equestrian team.
Wetzel expressed his gratitude, saying, “This was a total surprise,” further emphasizing the community’s warmth and generosity that enables such initiatives to thrive.
Wrapping Up the Gala
As the evening wrapped up, USCA Chancellor Daniel Heimmermann reminded attendees of the important mission at hand: to prepare graduates for the workforce while partnering with local businesses for future success. With such wonderful support from the community, it seems bright days lie ahead for USC Aiken and its ambitious programs.
In a world where we often hear about challenges, it’s events like the Winter Gala that remind us of the remarkable impact individuals and organizations can have when they come together for a common cause. Congratulations to all the honorees and everyone who contributes to making Aiken a better place!
