After leaving USC Aiken 15 years ago to pursue a professional basketball career, Commons demonstrated resilience and determination throughout his journey.

His path to graduation wasn’t exactly straightforward. Back in 2005, Commons faced significant life challenges when he was suspended from Findlay University after being charged with armed robbery. This unfortunate incident led to the loss of his scholarship and resulted in eight months spent in prison. After turning his life around, Commons played for various basketball teams across the globe, including stints in Bahrain, Germany, Brunei, Finland, and the Netherlands.

With the onset of COVID-19, Commons decided it was time to finish what he started and enrolled in USC Palmetto College’s online degree program. His gratitude for the Aiken community runs deep, and he expressed a strong desire to give back by helping troubled youth as a humanitarian.

Melvin Archie Jr.: A Role Model and Leader

The ceremony also spotlighted Melvin Archie Jr., who was honored as USC Aiken’s Outstanding Student of the Year. Archie excelled as the captain of the basketball team, served as a resident mentor, and led as fraternity chapter president. In January, Archie will begin his career as a fifth-grade teacher at East Aiken School of the Arts. He is already looking ahead and plans to pursue a master’s degree in the future, constantly striving for growth and leadership.
