Welcome to Aiken, South Carolina! This cozy little city has a big heart, and at the center of it all is the United Way of Aiken County (UWAC). This powerhouse organization plays a critical role in supporting local nonprofits and essential programs that lift up our neighbors in need.
Meet Ellen Luton, the passionate president of UWAC. Ellen’s dedication to her hometown is palpable. “I grew up here in Aiken and Aiken is my home,” she says, with a warm smile. “Everybody that lives here is sort of my family, and you take care of your family.” Her words reflect a deep-seated belief that by helping others, we create a stronger community.
Every day, Ellen sees firsthand the challenges that many residents in Aiken County are facing. “You know, it’s no secret that there are a number of people here in Aiken County that are in need of services,” she explains. “It’s my job to ensure that we raise enough money that we’re able to provide the funds for those critical need programs.” And she’s certainly making an impact; in 2023 alone, UWAC provided almost 1.7 million dollars in funding for 45 critical need programs throughout the county. Talk about making a difference!
The love and dedication Ellen pours into her job have not gone unnoticed. Keyatta Priester, the board chair of UWAC, describes her in glowing terms. “Ellen is extremely selfless. She puts others before herself at all times, and she’s beyond special,” she says. “She serves our community tirelessly and gives 150% of herself in everything from events to fundraising to outreach programs.” It’s clear that Ellen is a shining star in the Aiken community.
But what is it that keeps Ellen enthusiastic about her work? “It doesn’t feel like a job,” she says. “I’m getting up and going to live life and help others live life to the fullest.” With a perspective like that, it’s no wonder she brings such light to her efforts.
In her journey to give back, Ellen acknowledges the love and kindness she has received—something she treasures deeply. “People have shown me so much love and kindness throughout my life; it’s important for me to return that,” she expresses with sincerity. “I have been blessed beyond measure, and I want to share my blessing with everybody around me.” It’s truly heartwarming to see such gratitude driving someone to create positive change.
While Ellen and her team at UWAC have made significant strides, there’s always more to be done. The community’s needs keep growing, and so does Ellen’s determination. Her passion for helping others resonates throughout Aiken, inspiring others to join in the efforts and make a difference.
