Aiken, SC – In a significant development for the residents of Aiken, the Union Street Bridge has officially been confirmed to remain closed. This closure, which started back in January 2023 due to unspecified structural issues, marks the end of an era for many who have traversed this bridge. Aiken City Manager, Stuart Bedenbaugh, shared the recent news during a city council meeting on September 9, revealing that he spoke with South Carolina Transportation Secretary Justin Powell regarding the bridge’s fate.
The Union Street Bridge was one of five crucial bridges that cross the “railroad cut” through downtown Aiken. These bridges hold significant historical value, dating back to when the railroad tracks were rerouted in the early 1850s. Unfortunately, the Union Street Bridge was closed to all vehicular traffic as a precaution when weight restrictions proved inadequate to address the existing structural problems.
Bedenbaugh conveyed that the South Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) notified the city on August 30 that the bridge would not reopen for motor vehicle traffic. He mentioned, “The DOT informed me… that the Union Street Bridge is not going to be reopened.” This interesting turn of events has left many residents wondering where they go from here.
While the announcement was disappointing, there’s a silver lining to this situation. The DOT plans to work with the city to explore options for transforming the Union Street Bridge into a pedestrian-only structure. Bedenbaugh mentioned that they would start looking for grant funding to facilitate this conversion. As more people embrace walking and cycling as modes of transportation, a pedestrian bridge could be a lovely addition to the community, allowing residents to stroll through the area while enjoying the scenic views of downtown Aiken.
The story of the Union Street Bridge isn’t isolated. The other four bridges that cross the railroad cut have faced their share of challenges over the years. The Laurens Street Bridge dealt with sinking concerns back in April 2012 and was subsequently replaced. Meanwhile, the York and Fairfield Street Bridges were closed in 2016, and while the York Street Bridge has been replaced with a modern design replicating its historic wooden predecessor, the Fairfield Street Bridge remains closed, awaiting its future replacement.
In other news, approximately 100 water customers in Aiken have been urged to boil their water before drinking it. The advisory affects residents on Plantation Drive and Spring Valley Court. The city announced this boiling precaution on September 11, ensuring everyone is safe while the issue is being addressed.
Moreover, it’s reported that more development might be making its way to Aiken’s southern area near the Whiskey-Chukker Creek road intersection. On September 10, the Aiken Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Aiken City Council approve two utility service requests related to upcoming projects. Exciting changes are certainly on the horizon for the southern part of Aiken!
As we navigate these changes together, local residents are encouraged to stay involved. Whether it’s through attending city council meetings or keeping an eye on news updates, being involved helps ensure our community works together to address challenges. Additionally, supporting local journalism helps in sharing vital information that shapes our city.
As we move forward in this ever-evolving narrative of Aiken, it’s clear that change is both inevitable and may even bring unexpected opportunities for the beautiful city.
