In a quick response to Vice President Kamala Harris’ pick for a running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, President Donald J. Trump’s campaign was quick to condemn the decision, labeling Walz a “dangerously liberal extremist.” Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, plan to push this narrative throughout the campaign.
The Trump campaign’s criticism focused on a range of matters, from Walz’s alleged mishandling of racial justice protests in Minnesota in 2020 to his more liberal-leaning policies. The campaign also sought to connect him to the liberal ideologies and policies of California, which some perceive as a way to stir up criticisms among conservative voters.
Walz’s policies have attracted particular criticism from the Trump campaign. From supporting voting rights for former felons to advocating for eco-friendly measures such as reducing carbon emissions and tightening vehicle exhaust standards, his policies have fuelled concerns among conservatives. They see his policies as a shift towards a more leftist American society, a vision they contend is not shared by mainstream America.
Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt alleged that Walz was trying to spread what she termed as California’s “dangerously liberal” policies nationwide. In comments broadcast on Fox News, she inaccurately stated that Walz had wanted to “defund the police” in the wake of racial justice protests sparked by the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020.
The Trump campaign and its allies have focussed on the violent riots that occurred in Minneapolis following George Floyd’s death, attempting to link them to Walz and VP Kamala Harris. Targeting the perceived mishandling of the situation, they argue that Walz’s late response to the crisis contributed to the escalation of violence in the city.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis added his voice to the criticism, branding the Harris-Walz ticket as the “most left-wing ticket in American history” and blaming them for exacerbating the violence in Minneapolis.
Despite being the target of a barrage of criticism, Walz has defended his actions during the protests. The governor maintains that the delay in signing an executive allowing the National Guard to help control the situation was not a misstep, even as critics continue to focus squarely on his role during the crisis.
