Tragic Collision Claims Lives in Richmond County

Richmond County, Ga. – A beautiful evening turned tragic on August 16, 2024, as a head-on collision on Deans Bridge Road ended the lives of three young individuals. It’s hard to imagine a moment that starts off as ordinary can transform into a scene of horror in just seconds.

The Incident

According to officials from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, it all started around 7:53 PM when a police officer from Blythe made an attempt to pull over a vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver sped away, setting off a chain of events that would lead to heartbreaking consequences.

In a desperate bid to escape, the driver crossed over into the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with another car. The collision was severe, causing the pursuing vehicle to suddenly burst into flames, adding to the chaos and danger of the situation.

Lives Lost

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office identified the driver of the vehicle as Marcus Dunbar, 19, from Augusta. Tragically, Marcus was not alone; two young brothers, Barry Fields Jr., 15, and Casey Fields, 13, also lost their lives in the crash. Imagine the heartache their family must feel as they grapple with this unimaginable loss.

Impact on Others

The occupants of the other car involved in the collision were taken to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, they survived, but their injuries and current condition have not been disclosed. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time, hoping for a smooth and swift recovery.

Ongoing Investigations

The aftermath of such a tragic event leads to many questions. The coroner’s office, along with the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), is currently investigating the incident. What could have been done differently? Why did the driver flee? These are questions that linger in the minds of the community.
