In Augusta, a heartbreaking incident took place on Monday evening that has left the community in shock and mourning. A man named Anthony Way, 66, has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) as well as two felony counts after a tragic accident that resulted in the loss of a life. The incident occurred when Way’s vehicle hit Malcolm Leonard Kelly, a 47-year-old homeless man who was riding his bicycle along Milledgeville Road.
According to reports, the collision happened around 5:35 p.m. at the intersection of Milledgeville Road and Murphy Road. Tragically, Kelly was struck and, despite all efforts, was pronounced dead by 6:50 p.m., confirmed by Coroner Mark Bowen.
What makes this situation even more unsettling is that after hitting Kelly, Way allegedly fled the scene. Thanks to prompt and diligent investigative work, authorities managed to identify him quickly, leading to his arrest later that same evening. A sense of urgency and determination by law enforcement undoubtedly played a vital role in getting justice for Kelly.
Way is now facing serious charges that include felony homicide by vehicle and felony leaving the scene of an accident, along with the DUI charge. But Way’s troubles don’t just stop there; his past reveals a troubling history himself. His criminal record indicates prior convictions for cocaine possession, theft, domestic violence, trespassing, and multiple traffic violations. As a result, he is currently being held without bond at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
This unfortunate event marks at least the 10th pedestrian death in Richmond County this year. Disturbingly, several of these tragic fatalities have involved homeless victims, highlighting a concerning trend that has prompted community discussions about pedestrian safety and support for vulnerable populations.
In a recent case, just last Thursday, another homeless individual, Jerico Blair, aged 53, was fatally struck by a vehicle on the 2500 block of Meadowbrook Drive. Such incidents remind us all of the fragility of life and the importance of caring for one another, especially those who find themselves in precarious situations.
Local residents are understandably shaken by the news. “It’s heartbreaking to think about someone losing their life in such a way. Every person deserves safety on the roads, no matter their circumstances,” said a community member. Conversations are starting to emerge around how to address these issues, not only through law enforcement but also through increased support for the homeless population and better traffic safety measures.
The city continues to grapple with the implications of these tragic events. With ongoing discussions about pedestrian safety and support initiatives for those experiencing homelessness, much work is left to be done.
As the community processes this devastating news, many will be hoping for a future where no more lives are lost on the streets and all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, are afforded respect and safety.
For now, many will await the next developments in Way’s case, as justice for Malcolm Leonard Kelly remains at the forefront of everyone’s minds in Augusta.
