Exciting Tech Upgrade for Students in Aiken!
Good morning, Aiken! Today is a beautiful day filled with plentiful sunshine as temperatures reach a comfortable high of 71°F and gentle winds from the north-northwest at about 5 to 10 mph. It’s a perfect day to celebrate a fantastic development happening at the Center for Innovative Learning at Pinecrest!
In an impressive show of support for education, the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) has recently sponsored a generous $20,000 donation to the Aiken County Public School District’s Center for Innovative Learning (CIL). This contribution is a significant boost for students who need extra support in their educational journey, particularly those in the mathematics department.
Laptops and Learning: A Game Changer
This funding will be used to purchase 30 new laptops along with a charging station, which will significantly improve access to technology for over 350 students in the mathematics department. Previously, teachers at CIL had to share a limited number of laptops, making it challenging to provide personalized attention and resources tailored to each student’s needs.
Khaleelah Stroman, who teaches middle-level math, is super enthusiastic about the arrival of these new laptops. She plans to integrate the devices into her lessons to help students grasp key concepts using virtual manipulatives. “Learning and applying mathematics is crucial for student success,” she noted passionately. “These laptops will allow us to use exciting online tools to represent concepts and enhance overall understanding of math standards.”
Thanks to this upgrade, students will have access to a variety of engaging online educational resources, including Math Nation, Illustrative Math, Desmos, Aleks, Kahoot, and Quizlet. These tools are vital for crafting interactive and personalized learning experiences that meet the unique needs of every student.
Impact on the Teaching Experience
Sandra Smith, who educates high school math students at CIL, expressed her excitement about the potential improvements this sponsorship will bring. “The laptops will alleviate our limitations and let us use online lecture videos, assessments, and educational games more effectively,” said Smith. This upgrade is anticipated to positively impact at least 350 students each year, providing them with new opportunities for growth and learning.
A Commitment to Educational Advancement
SRNS President and CEO, Dennis Carr, shared his enthusiasm for the project: “We are thrilled to support the Center for Innovative Learning at Pinecrest in providing tailored and meaningful educational experiences to students who need it most. SRNS is committed to investing in programs that foster learning and growth in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).”
This initiative aligns perfectly with the SRNS’s broader goal of ensuring that every student has access to modern technology, which is crucial for educational advancement, especially in STEM fields. The positive impact of this technology on student learning and engagement is something the community can look forward to witnessing.
Community Spirit Shines Bright
In addition to the tech upgrade, it’s worth mentioning that Aiken is buzzing with other local news, including recent events like the Aiken Buddy Walk promoting awareness of Down syndrome, and the ongoing efforts in the community following Tropical Storm Helene.
So as we enjoy this beautiful sunny day and reflect on exciting advancements in education here in Aiken, let’s celebrate the positive changes being made and the dedicated individuals working to improve the lives of our students. Together, we are building a brighter future, one laptop at a time!
