Sunny Skies Brighten Aiken’s Annual Bloodies & Bagels Event
Under the majestic branches of a live oak tree, the charming city of Aiken hosted its much-loved Bloodies & Bagels charity event on the crisp morning of November 28. The skies began cloudy, but as the sun peaked through, it set the perfect backdrop for a gathering that promised delicious food, delightful company, and a heartwarming cause.
A Celebratory Atmosphere
As guests arrived at Banksia, the historic mansion serving as the venue, they were greeted by Eleanor Togneri, the enthusiastic organizer of the event. “There’s a bagel table there, if you want to grab a bagel, there’s coffee on the porch, and there’s a bar back there, so make yourself at home,” she cheerfully directed the attendees. And home they did make it, with warm smiles and laughter filling the air as couples, families, and friends gathered to enjoy the festive occasion.
Flavorful Offerings
Patrons buzzed with excitement as they explored an array of choices—from the savory Bloody Mary bar to a tempting selection of bagels. With flavors like cinnamon, blueberry, and asiago cheese available, there was something for everyone. The live music amplified the joyous atmosphere, with the lively tunes of The Water Kickers complementing the flavors of the event.
Supporting a Noble Cause
This year, the proceeds from Bloodies & Bagels went to benefit Aiken Equine Rescue, an organization dedicated to saving and rehabilitating horses in need. Togneri, who took over this annual event eight years ago, shared her commitment to giving back. “Every single dollar goes to them,” she stated passionately. “We’re going to continue giving it to different charities every year.”
Pam Patron, a representative from Aiken Equine Rescue, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “This is a fabulous fundraiser for us. It’s a fun event, and it gets us into the community,” she said, highlighting just how vital such contributions are for their operations. Since their inception in 2006, the rescue has saved over 1,600 animals, and their efforts continue to rely heavily on donations from kind-hearted people.
Local Volunteers Step Up
The warmth of Aiken residents was palpable, especially with young volunteers from South Aiken High School lending a helping hand. Among them was Angel Patel, the vice president of the National Honor Society, who played an integral role in the bagel tent. “It feels really nice because I get to interact with people. I love social events like this and I just like helping in general,” she shared eagerly, accompanied by her classmates.
A Community Favorite
For many regular attendees, Bloodies & Bagels has become a cherished tradition. Anna Domingo, a local who moved to Aiken from Las Vegas in 2010, remarked, “I love this event,” while Terry Kitchings added, “It’s a great event. It brings the community together, and it’s in a beautiful location.”
Looking to the Future
The success of the event, marked by the sale of 1,000 pre-sold tickets, showcases the community’s dedication and enthusiasm. As the festivities continued, friends chatted joyfully, bags full of warm bagels in hand, while others swayed to the music as daylight turned to the crisp evening air, a perfect ending to a wonderful community gathering.
As the final notes of the music echoed around Banksia, the warmth of the day lingered, symbolizing not just a day of fundraising, but of camaraderie, compassion, and community spirit in vibrant Aiken.
