Statesville Mourns the Loss of Beloved Veteran and Community Leader

In the heart of Statesville, a wave of sadness has touched the lives of many, as the community comes to terms with the passing of Mr. Eugene “Gene” Martin Aiken. Gene, who was 74 years old, took his last breath on Saturday, November 12, 2016, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. His departure leaves a void that friends, family, and admirers will find hard to fill.

A Life Rich in Service and Family

Born on July 25, 1942, in Langley, South Carolina, Gene was raised in a family that valued hard work and commitment. The son of the late William Marion Aiken and Dorothy Matheny Aiken, he graduated from Statesville Senior High School in 1960. Eager for knowledge, he further pursued his education at both Catawba College and Mitchell College, setting the stage for a life dedicated to not only his career but also his community.

On the 25th of July in 1964, he married Beverly Sherrill Aiken, and together they celebrated an incredible 52 years of love and partnership. Their bond remains an inspiration to everyone who knew them. Gene took pride in being a devoted husband, and a loving father to their two daughters, Amanda “Mandy” Aiken Hunter of Cary, NC, and Natalie Aiken Larson of Steamboat Springs, CO. His role as a grandfather to Katie and Davis Hunter was a title he cherished deeply.

A Hero at Heart

Gene’s career was just as impressive as his life at home. He served with honor in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he was part of the elite Green Beret Special Forces as a medic. This experience not only showcased his bravery but also his unwavering commitment to helping others. After his time in service, he transitioned to the private sector, working for Uniglass Industries and later spending over three decades as a District Sales Manager with Statesville Brick Company, retiring in 2006.

Embracing the Good Life

After settling into retirement, Gene enjoyed life to the fullest. He was frequently found playing a round of golf, indulging in woodworking projects, taking peaceful boating trips, or fishing in his favorite spots. These joyous pastimes were enhanced by the time he spent with family and the community. Gene was a dedicated member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and was also a former member of the Statesville Country Club, where he built lasting friendships.

Remembering Gene

Gene’s legacy will certainly live on through the many lives he touched. He is survived by his brother, William M. Aiken of Aiken, SC, and his sister, Ann Edmundson of Raleigh, NC. The outpouring of love and support from community members is heartwarming, with many coming forward to express condolences during this difficult time.

A Final Goodbye

A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2016, at Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Michael Gehring will be officiating the service. Following the ceremony, the family invites friends and loved ones to share their memories and support at their home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Fifth Street Ministries, Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, and Broad Street United Methodist Church. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.nicholsonfunerals.com.
