Support for Families in Need: The Heart of Augusta’s Ronald McDonald House
In the heart of Augusta, Georgia, a beacon of hope shines brightly for families facing some of the toughest battles of their lives. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta plays a vital role in supporting families with critically injured or sick children. For many families facing medical crises, the distance from home can feel unbearable, and that’s where this special charity steps in to provide a supportive and caring environment.
A Lifeline for Families
Not everyone receiving care at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia is local to the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). For families like Bridget Griffin from Brunswick, Georgia, the Ronald McDonald House has become a home away from home. Bridget is currently staying at the house with her 7-month-old son, Akari, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was just two months old. This heart-wrenching news turned her world upside down.
A Tough Diagnosis
“The diagnosis was Choroid Plexus Carcinoma, and the tumor was the size of a baseball,” Bridget recalled, her voice echoing the fear and concern every parent dreads. After enduring surgery shortly after birth to remove the tumor, Akari faced yet another hurdle; a second tumor appeared just two months post-surgery. “He’s had a total of four surgeries at just seven months old,” Bridget explained, her eyes filled with pride and pain as she described her little fighter’s journey.
The Ronald McDonald House: A Comforting Presence
Thanks to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta, families like Bridget’s have a place to stay while their children receive critical medical care. “They called me back the next day and said they had a room for us,” Bridget recalled. “I came with literally nothing, so I was grateful to take a shower and have a hot meal.” This supportive environment has allowed her to be close to the hospital while focusing on her son’s care.
Bridget has had to utilize the Ronald McDonald House more than 30 different times, a testament to the ongoing challenges they’ve faced. “I’m forever grateful for the Ronald McDonald House for letting us stay here and giving us the opportunity to be close to the hospital,” she said with deep appreciation.
An Invitation to Be Part of the Solution
