Aiken might be bracing for a soggy weekend, but that didn’t dampen spirits at the festive events held for our beloved veterans. With predictions of rain likely and highs only reaching around 62°F, many locals were bundled up and ready for some holiday cheer despite the downpour.
As residents snuggled up indoors, the weather report made it clear: rain is on the way. With a 100% chance of rain and potential rainfall around a quarter of an inch, people can expect light rain early in the day, transitioning into cloudy skies with showers continuing overnight. Temperatures will drop to a low of about 58°F with winds blowing in from the south-southwest at a gentle pace of 5 to 10 mph. Although the weather might keep you in, it sounds like the perfect time for a warm cup of cocoa while reflecting on the holiday spirit!
Rainy weather couldn’t put a damper on the smiles at Cumberland Village on December 6. The Aiken County Veterans Council, led by Army veteran Lowell Koppert, made sure that the holiday season was filled with warmth and appreciation for local veterans. Alongside Koppert were Marine veteran Andrew Siders and a vintage 1941 scout car that added a special touch to what is now an annual tradition known as Operation St. Nick.
On that day, Santa and Mrs. Claus made a grand entrance, and thanks to a little ingenuity, a 1941 scout car took the lead as the transport for Santa, while mechanical hiccups on a 1953 Dodge pickup led to some light-hearted laughter instead of delays. After all, who wouldn’t enjoy a warm-hearted Santa arriving in a classic military vehicle?
Everyone gathered at Cumberland Village to exchange stories, laughter, and heartfelt gifts. The joy radiating from the gathering was palpable. Many veterans received presents, and for some, handwritten letters from local school children brought an extra touch of sentiment. Os, these gifts are a reminder that our veterans are loved and appreciated.
Among the attendees was Aiken County’s director of veterans affairs, Dwight Bradham, who reflected on how often the holidays can be tough for those who have served. He expressed how crucial it is to remind veterans that they are not forgotten: “During this time of year, it can be very, very emotional for veterans. It can get tough – a lot of low points for people, with mental health and stuff. This little ray of sunshine, this little snowflake coming down, is a way to let them know, ‘Hey, you’re not forgotten, and we appreciate you.’”
Started five years ago by Koppert during his time in Afghanistan, the idea blossomed into something special. “It was a no-brainer,” he said, emphasizing how important it is to wash our veterans in the love and gratitude they deserve. Special thanks went out to fellow veteran Sheila Pate for her significant role in organizing the event.
The day concluded with heartfelt words from Koppert, addressing veterans, their families, and the staff. “This really is an Aiken County project,” he said. “It’s Aiken County that’s wrapping their arms around you right now to say ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘thank you for your service.’”
Among the attendees, Nick Kiraly, a Navy veteran who later served in the Air Force, shared a bit about his military experience. With numerous accolades, including two Bronze Stars, he remarked on the healing and joy that events like this bring, especially during this festive season.
As we say farewell to another busy week, let’s remember that despite the rainy days that lie ahead, the warmth of the community and the spirit of giving can brighten even the cloudiest of times in Aiken.
