News Summary

Paine College, under the leadership of Dr. Lester A. McCorn, is poised for transformation as it enters its 143rd academic year. Recently inaugurated as the college’s 18th president, Dr. McCorn articulated a vision driven by five key pillars: faith, family, focus, fight, and fortitude. As the institution aims to align academic offerings with market needs, there’s a renewed focus on critical fields like healthcare and cybersecurity. With a dedicated transition team established and a commitment to overcoming past challenges, excitement and optimism envelop the Paine College community.

Paine College Welcomes New Beginnings Under Dr. McCorn’s Leadership

In the heart of Augusta, Georgia, the buzz around Paine College is all about fresh starts and exciting opportunities. The 2025 Spring Convocation recently marked a significant moment as Dr. Lester A. McCorn was officially introduced as the college’s 18th president. It’s the start of Paine College’s 143rd academic year, and anticipation is building for the new journey ahead.

A Vision to Thrive

Dr. McCorn didn’t hold back when it came to sharing his vision for the college’s future. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty, and staff, he laid out five pivotal pillars that will guide Paine College moving forward. These pillars—faith, family, focus, fight, and fortitude—are aimed at fostering a supportive and resilient community among students.

But the president didn’t stop there. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that what students learn aligns closely with what employers are looking for in today’s job market. Particularly, he pointed to fields such as health care, cybersecurity, and hospitality. Notably, Dr. McCorn shed light on the lucrative prospects in cybersecurity, where graduates could potentially earn salaries exceeding $100,000, creating pathways for many low-wealth, first-generation students. This aspect of a Paine education is a compelling factor that the administration wants to harness.

Building a Strong Foundation

To help execute this new vision, a dedicated transition team comprising around 30 members is hard at work alongside Provost Dr. Pamela Richardson Wilkes. This team is focused on assessing the college’s strengths and weaknesses as well as defining opportunities and threats in the landscape of higher education.

Paine College has faced its share of challenges in the past, especially when it comes to financial stability. McCorn acknowledged these difficulties openly during his remarks, expressing a determination to tackle them head-on. A notable piece of good news emerged: the federal Office of Management and Budget recently rescinded a memorandum from the previous administration that would have halted federal grants and loans for students. This decision is particularly crucial as over 95% of Paine’s student body depends heavily on federal financial aid for their education.

Resilience Amid Adversity

Not everything has been smooth sailing for Paine College. The impact of Hurricane Helene has left a significant mark on the campus, causing damages estimated at around $5 million. Dr. McCorn noted the importance of community support in restoring the campus to its former glory, showcasing the college’s resilience and commitment to recovery.

Despite the challenges, excitement fills the air. The new administration aims to roll out opportunities that promise to expand academic programs, particularly in health sciences and hospitality. Faculty, staff, and students alike have expressed their eagerness to embrace the changes that are on the horizon under Dr. McCorn’s leadership.

A Community United

As the college embarks on this new chapter, there’s a sense of unity and optimism among the Paine College community. The new president has set the course for growth, outlining meaningful steps that can leverage the institution’s strengths while addressing its challenges. With a clear vision, a strong leadership team, and a dedicated student body, the future looks bright for Paine College.

In a world where education can be a gateway to opportunities, the excitement around Dr. McCorn’s leadership symbolizes a hopeful new dawn at Paine College. As everyone looks forward to the journey ahead, it’s clear that great things are on the horizon.
