North Augusta Allocates A-Tax Funds to Boost Local Tourism

North Augusta is buzzing with excitement as the Accommodations Tax Advisory Board recently put forward its recommendations for nearly $200,000 in tourism funding. These funds, drawn from the city’s portion of the state hotel tax, are intended to pump new life into local initiatives that draw visitors and keep the momentum going in this charming city. The recommendations were presented to the City Council on November 19, setting the stage for a brighter tourism future.

Investing in the Community

This year, the Accommodations Tax Advisory Board, consisting of dedicated local members, has suggested various projects designed to entice visitors and make North Augusta an even more attractive destination. It’s a bit like creating a flourishing garden—you nurture it little by little, and it eventually blooms with all sorts of wonderful options for residents and visitors alike.

John Felak, the board’s chairman, expressed enthusiasm over the growing interest from organizations requesting funding. “I think that the programs we have done over the last five, six, seven years are starting to show the benefits. We’re seeing requests get larger because the events are more successful,” he said with a smile, reflecting on the positive trend in community engagement and tourism opportunities.

Exciting Events in the Pipeline

Among the standout recommendations is the plan for the Augusta Symphony to host a July 4 concert at SRP Park. This initiative, spearheaded by Becky Dearden, aims to draw families and music lovers across the river for a delightful evening filled with symphonic melodies. The Symphony is looking for $25,000 to make this vision a reality, and the board has shown strong support by recommending $20,000 to help the plan unfold.

The board has also excitedly recommended funding for the Jack-O-Lantern Jubilee, which annually welcomes thousands of attendees to its vibrant festivities. North Augusta Tourism Director, Karl Waldhauer, has requested $60,000 for this October event—more than double last year’s ask. The board supports him with a proposed allocation of $45,000. “It’s kind of North Augusta’s family reunion,” Waldhauer remarked, highlighting the event’s community spirit.

New Adventures and Festivals

But wait, there’s more! A new initiative worth noting is the proposed Jessamine Festival, aiming to become the signature event for the North Augusta Beautification Foundation. This wine walk event, featuring live music and lovely tastings, is set to lift community spirits and promote local businesses. The board is proposing $12,280 to cover marketing costs for this exciting new addition to North Augusta’s events calendar.

Moreover, the Mid South Sociological Association is slated to receive a modest $375 to help promote a conference in October that could bring around 250 visitors to the city. It’s these smaller events that often create the intimate connections—and spending—that contribute to North Augusta’s charm.

Commitment to Partnership and Growth

The advisory board’s proposals reflect a solid commitment not just to tourism but also to community growth and collaboration. North Augusta Forward has requested $55,000 to fund connection projects that enhance walkability and accessibility between key areas like downtown and Riverside Village. Connecting communities is crucial, and these improvements could snag even more visitors exploring local attractions.

As North Augusta prepares to decide on these recommendations at the upcoming City Council meeting on December 2, the excitement in the air is palpable. The proposed investments not only aim to enhance tourism but also strengthen the bond between local businesses, nonprofits, and community initiatives.

In conclusion, North Augusta is ready to open its doors wider than ever, armed with plans to attract more visitors and foster local experiences. With a busy calendar ahead, the city’s potential for growth shines brighter than ever before. Stay tuned—it’s going to be an eventful year ahead!
