In a heartwarming development for the education community, North Augusta is buzzing with excitement as the Aiken County School District announces a remarkable achievement. Thanks to the generosity of SRP Federal Credit Union, a whopping $1 million has been donated to the school district through the innovative High School Affinity Debit Card Program. This program, which kicked off back in August 2018, aims to provide high schools across the county with essential funding in a unique way.
The High School Affinity Debit Card Program is simple yet impactful. Each high school in the district has its very own debit card. Whenever someone swipes one of these cards, a portion of the transaction goes directly to the respective school, contributing to its funding. It’s a fantastic cycle where daily purchases translate into much-needed support for educational facilities.
Dr. Corey Murphy, the Superintendent of Aiken County Public Schools, couldn’t be more thrilled about this generous contribution. He shared his thoughts, highlighting how special this is compared to the usual funding the schools receive: “Typically when school districts receive funds, they’re earmarked, they have a bunch of rules that we have to use to spend them. Sometimes they’re buried between getting the funds and where they can actually help the kids the most. So, when we get funds like this from outside organizations, it’s just tremendous—and it has an immediate impact.”
This type of funding allows schools the flexibility to choose how they want to improve their learning environment. Funds can be directed toward necessities like new desks, state-of-the-art computers, and other resources designed to enhance the overall educational experience for students. Dr. Murphy pointed out, “All eligible schools are able to take this money, and turn it into something that’s going to improve our learning environments, and help the kids have a better sense of belonging to the buildings.”
One of the areas that Dr. Murphy expressed particular excitement about is the potential for renovations in the front office areas of high schools throughout the county. “A lot of times you come in our front offices— we don’t really have a furniture budget. So we can buy furniture with this money as well. So, it’s an exciting time for us,” he explained.
In conjunction with this uplifting news, the Aiken County School Board recently held the first of five public meetings to discuss plans for renewing a 1% sales tax that was initially approved by voters in 2014. Community members are eager to engage in this conversation and contribute their voices to decisions that will affect their local schools. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 17th at 6:00 PM at South Aiken High School, making it an essential event for anyone invested in the future of education in the area.
This generous donation isn’t just about numbers—it reflects the caring spirit of North Augusta’s communities and the commitment to ensure that students receive the best possible education. It’s a reminder that when local organizations and schools come together, the power of community really shines. After all, every swipe of that debit card adds up to big changes for students and their schools.
So here’s to many more successful partnerships and a brighter future for Aiken County schools! Let’s keep the momentum going and continue to support our educators and students!
