On a bright September day in North Augusta, the community gathered together at American Legion Post 71 to honor and remember the brave service members who were either prisoners of war or are still missing in action. With warm temperatures reaching up to 91°F and a few clouds dotting the sky, the atmosphere was set for a heartfelt ceremony on September 19.

A Day of Remembrance

The POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony is held annually on the third Friday of September, and this year was no different. Commander Phil Homan of American Legion Post 71 passionately reminded attendees of the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by these service members and their families. “We want to make people aware of that, so they are reminded of the sacrifices they did and that their families had done,” he shared.

This particular ceremony was held at their headquarters on 333 East Spring Grove Avenue, a change from their usual location in Wade Hampton Veterans Park. Homan explained this decision was made to encourage more community members and families to join in the remembrance. The site buzzed with warmth and camaraderie as friends and family gathered for the occasion.

Symbolism in Every Detail

The ceremony featured several poignant symbols meant to represent the essence of the day. Homan took a moment to explain the significance of these items: there was an empty chair to signify a missing comrade, an inverted glass because they cannot share a drink, a red rose to represent the blood shed for freedom, a candle serving as an eternal light, and a lemon to remind us of the bitter taste of uncertainty. Each symbol served as a powerful reminder that many service members are not with us today.

Among those present was Army veteran Melvin Boseman, who reflected on the emotional weight of the ceremony and its significance, especially for veterans of the Vietnam War. “This is just one of the ways that we can let them know they are not forgotten,” he stated, emphasizing that every day should be a moment to remember those who served alongside the POWs and MIAs. Boseman recounted his own experiences in Vietnam, where he knew several individuals who were captured but ultimately released.
