North Augusta Parking Decks Post “Seized” Signs Due to Unpaid Taxes

North Augusta, S.C. — Residents and visitors in the North Augusta area, particularly those who frequent SRP Park, may have noticed a series of bright orange “seized” signs appearing on nearby parking decks. Despite the alarming appearance of these signs, local officials assure the public that the parking facilities remain open and accessible.

Background of the Situation

These signs are a result of more than $145,000 in unpaid property taxes associated with the parking decks. This tax delinquency primarily involves the county taxes; however, city taxes for the property have been fully paid.

Aiken County Council Vice-Chairman Andrew Siders explained that the timing aligns with a usual tax season when property taxes are due. Unfortunately, notification letters sent by mail to the property owner, Greenstone, have consistently been returned without confirmation.

What Do the Signs Mean?

The “seized” signs are intended to inform the public about the tax issue and warn the property owner to take remedial action promptly. Siders noted, “We post the seized sign so that lets everyone know that they need to take action very soon.” Although the signs seem alarming, they serve a functional purpose in drawing attention to the unresolved taxes.

The Current State of Parking Decks

Despite the signage, there is no cause for concern regarding the availability of parking for local events or daily activities. Both parking decks in question continue to operate as usual. According to Siders, there has been no history of issues with these decks, and he remains optimistic that the problem can be resolved quickly. “They haven’t had any problems in the past and I assume that they’ll be able to clear this up pretty quickly,” he stated.

Potential Consequences

There is a looming deadline attached to this situation; if the property taxes are not settled, the docking of the decks could lead to them being put up for sale. This action could take place as soon as November 4, should the delinquency remain unaddressed. The stakes involved highlight the importance for the property owner to respond appropriately and promptly to rectify the outstanding tax issue.

Conclusion

In summary, while the appearance of “seized” signs on the North Augusta parking decks might raise some eyebrows, local officials emphasize that the decks are still functioning as expected. Although the signs stem from tax issues that need to be resolved quickly by the property owner, there is no immediate concern for the public’s use of the facilities.

As North Augusta continues to grow with new businesses and apartments, authorities encourage the community to stay informed and vigilant regarding local developments and issues such as this one.
