North Augusta Prepares for the Thrilling Return of the Annual Palmetto Peach Marathon

North Augusta Gears Up for the Annual Palmetto Peach Marathon

North Augusta is buzzing with excitement as the city prepares for the highly anticipated seventh annual Palmetto Peach Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K on November 30. With sunny skies expected and a high of 73°F, the weather promises to be just about perfect for runners and spectators alike!

A Race Against the Odds

This year’s marathon almost didn’t happen due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which caused significant damage to the North Augusta Greenway and led to its closure for cleanup since November 7. But local officials, including Mayor Briton Williams, are determined to bring some normalcy back to the community. “It’s another event for normalcy,” he mentioned, highlighting the importance of this race for the local spirit.

The marathon’s schedule is set, with the half marathon kicking off at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K at 8:10 a.m., and the 5K at 8:15 a.m. “At one point, we weren’t sure if this race was still going to happen this year with the amount of destruction on the Greenway,” said Jenafer McCauley, North Augusta’s mayor pro tempore and owner of Fleet Feet North Augusta. Fortunately, everyone has pulled together to get the course ready for the expected 18,000 participants—the largest turnout to date!

The Course and Community Spirit

This exciting event will take participants through both South Carolina and Georgia, starting at SRP Park, winding through the North Augusta Greenway, before heading into downtown North Augusta and Augusta, finishing back at the park. The community has rallied together to remove obstacles and clear trees, making it possible for the race to proceed.

“We are thrilled to see the amount of people who still want to get out and run,” McCauley said. Although there were no changes to the 5K and 10K routes, the half marathon course has been adjusted slightly by about three miles. The sections open for the race will be cleared up to Cypress Drive, ensuring a safe and joyful experience for all runners.

More than Just a Race

As the big day approaches, organizers have been hard at work coordinating with city officials and local businesses to ensure everything runs smoothly. McCauley emphasized that this event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of community spirit, allowing people to cheer each other on and support local businesses. Plus, the marathon aims to give back to the community by raising $5,000 for the Friends of the Greenway.

“I think the runners and spectators will anticipate a really great event,” she added, looking forward to an exciting day with plenty of energy and enthusiasm all around.

Join the Fun!

So, whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to enjoy the festivities, the Palmetto Peach Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K promises to be a fantastic event for everyone.
