North Augusta Gears Up for Marching Band Season

North Augusta, SC – As summer gives way to the new school year, excitement builds for marching band season at North Augusta High School (NAHS). This time of year is synonymous with football and local community spirit, especially for the students involved in the Jacket Regiment, the school’s marching band.

A Year-Round Commitment

The Marching Band Director, Chuck Deen, explained how preparation for the upcoming season actually begins long before students return to school. “I start after this marching band season for the next one, planning our show concept, prop design, and music selection,” he noted. Once summer break ended, the students enjoyed a brief two-week hiatus before jumping into two Tuesday evening mini-camps from 6 to 9 p.m.

After having the week of July 4 off, the full march camp kicked off the week of July 8. “We had four days and then two mini camps, and now here we are in school,” Deen added, reflecting on the busy schedule. The practice times are subject to the weather, emphasizing flexibility when planning their rehearsals.

Weather Challenges and Adaptability

After school, practices typically run from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m., but if the temperature soars, the band staying inside for longer is a common solution before heading to the practice field. Senior and piccolo player Gaby Cordez shared that while the heat can be tough, the band finds ways to keep things fun and engaging. “It can be difficult because of the heat, but we make it enjoyable,” Cordez stated, highlighting the camaraderie among the band members.

This Year’s Theme: The Edge of kNIGHT

Every year, the marching band adopts a unique theme for their performance, and this year’s concept is The Edge of kNIGHT, an interesting take on the classic tale of Cinderella and her knight. Deen noted that the kids enjoy music with a mix of classical and darker tones. “So, this year’s show is chopped of Russian and Germanic operatic classical music, so they like it a lot,” he remarked.

Kickoff of Competition Season

As anticipation builds, the competition season is set to debut on September 14. The Jacket Regiment will host the Bands Across the Savannah clinic exhibition, featuring several local schools, including Midland Valley and Silver Bluff. Deen is hopeful that this small but spirited event will grow, leading to a full-blown competition that might attract bands from Richmond County and Columbia County to participate as well.

Reflecting on what he looks forward to in the competition season, Deen expressed his excitement about showcasing the creativity of this year’s show. “It’s very creative,” he said, indicating the pride the band members feel in their artistic expression.

Community Spirit at Football Games

The Jacket Regiment will be performing regularly at North Augusta High School football games on Friday nights, an event that serves as a vibrant highlight for the community, bringing together fans, families, and friends. With enthusiasm running high, both the marching band and the football team prepare for another passionate season filled with teamwork, competition, and school pride.

As North Augusta gears up for the fall football season, marching band members are not just preparing for performances. They are building memories, fostering friendships, and creating a rhythm that resonates throughout the community.
