North Augusta, S.C. is buzzing with chatter these days, and it’s all about the beloved Greeneway. If you’ve been planning to take a stroll, jog, or bike ride through this local gem, hold onto your hats! Starting Monday at 7 a.m., the Greeneway is closing down for some much-needed maintenance and clean-up. And guess what? It’s going to be closed “until further notice.”
For many, the Greeneway is a second home. Locals like Christine Buhmeyer frequent it daily, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. “I come out here almost every single day, if not once, twice,” she shared. “After Hurricane Helene, there’s still damage. Trees are down, mud is scattered on the paths, and closed signs are littered everywhere.” The full closure covers everything from the Riverside roundabout to the soccer complex and the Riverfront loop.
It seems the closure has caught many residents by surprise. Mary McCall, a fellow Greeneway enthusiast, recounts her recent attempt to access the area. “I was looking forward to coming on the Greeneway when we found ourselves in her backyard. But there was this big yellow tape everywhere,” she explained. Not one to let a little tape ruin the fun, they found alternative plans. “We went to the amphitheater instead, and luckily that was open!”
While this closure is a bummer for many, some folks are choosing to focus on the silver lining. Georgina Knox, who has made walking a part of her daily routine, is an inspiration with her positive attitude. “I don’t pay much attention to things like that anymore because I have dementia,” she said candidly. “But when I go for a walk, I just remind myself of all the good things in my life. If bad things come up, I just push ’em aside.”
So, what’s next? North Augusta plans to keep everyone in the loop through their social media channels. It’s wise to keep an eye on those platforms for updates regarding when the Greeneway will be reopening!
The Greeneway isn’t just a path; it’s a cherished spot in the community where residents go to unwind and enjoy outdoor activities. Whether it’s a spot for a leisurely walk or a place to connect with friends, losing access, even temporarily, leaves a noticeable void. During times when people often feel disconnected, places like the Greeneway bring everyone together.
As the city gears up for the maintenance, it serves as a reminder of the resilience of both nature and the community. Each setback can lead to a fresh start, and when the Greeneway reopens, it will be better than ever.
So, let’s keep our fingers crossed for quick repairs and remember to enjoy what other local attractions are available in the meantime. And of course, a huge thank you to all the Parks and Recreation staff for their hard work! This closure may be temporary, but the love for the Greeneway will always remain a constant in the hearts of those who cherish it.
Until the Greeneway reopens, stay safe, stay active, and keep soaking up the joys of living in such a wonderful community!
