North Augusta City Council Allocates $1.43 Million in Unused Funds for Community Improvements

North Augusta’s Windfall: City Council Approves $1.43 Million in Unused Funding!

North Augusta is making headlines this week, but not just because of the clouds threatening rain! Nope, it’s all about the city’s smart management of leftover funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. Thanks to some savvy budget work, the City Council recently approved a reallocation of $1.43 million in unused contingencies from completed projects. This decision came through on November 18, exciting residents who are eagerly awaiting improvements in their community!

What’s the Big Idea?

So, what exactly will the city do with this substantial sum? First up, families with kiddos will be thrilled to hear that the Creighton Park—that quaint patch of green off Lake and West Pine Grove avenues—is set to get a shiny new playground! The old one has been in need of an update for some time, and thanks to these leftover pandemic relief funds, the solution is finally on the horizon.

But that’s not all! North Augusta will also use part of the reallocated funds to fill in some gaps within the Public Safety department. Back in the spring, the city created a Community Action Team, which required pulling three officers off their shifts. Now, thanks to a federal grant and this newfound cash, the city can hire those officers back, ensuring our neighborhoods stay safe and sound.

How Did This Happen?

Let’s rewind a bit to understand how North Augusta came across this treasure. The city received a hefty total of $11.87 million from the American Rescue Plan. While most of it has been spent on various projects—everything from essential infrastructure to enhancing public amenities—there was still a pot of money left over. The $1.43 million in question comes from unused contingencies from previous undertakings that didn’t need all the allocated funds. Think of it like those spare coins you find in the couch cushions!

City Administrator Jim Clifford emphasized the importance of being judicious with spending. “We don’t ever want to give any of it back. We’ve been cautious about how we want to spend this,” he explained. Sounds like a wise game plan, right?

What’s in the Works?

Of the reallocated funds, over $854,600 will have to be used in strict accordance with the original guidelines set by the Treasury. This chunk will primarily fund necessary infrastructure projects, like upgrading older water meters, which sounds like a win for both efficiency and our precious resources.

The remainder, a cool $591,200, offers more flexibility! This is where the city gets creative, allowing them to proceed with hiring three new Public Safety officers without breaking the bank. Previously, concerns about budget impacts kept council members awake at night, but this funding will alleviate those worries. “It will give us wiggle room to potentially fund things we had to cut in the budget,” Clifford noted.

Let’s Talk Bonuses!

Additionally, the city will issue bonus checks of up to $1,500 to city employees who responded to the recent storm damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene. That’s a nice little incentive for their hard work during the chaos! These bonuses are also under the Treasury’s guidelines and will not be paid to City Council members or contracted employees. So, commendations to those on the ground helping our community!

Final Words

As 2024 approaches, North Augusta is making sure it doesn’t leave any money on the table. With crucial deadlines looming, the city is working diligently to allocate every last penny. Clifford confidently assured residents, “We want to be very conservative… ensuring that we are spending money in a beneficial way.” And as the city takes those next steps, one thing is for certain—the excitement is building for all the improvements we can soon expect! Stay tuned, North Augusta; brighter, better days are ahead!
