North Augusta Welcomes the Colorful Creations of Adeana Berry
In the vibrant city of North Augusta, the air is filled with the buzz of creativity, and one local artist is standing out in a big way. Adeana Berry, a talented artist known for her stunning portraits of celebrities, has been making waves with her colorful and expressive works. From the iconic faces of Aretha Franklin and James Brown to modern stars like Rihanna and J. Cole, Berry’s art isn’t just about likeness; it’s about capturing the essence of her subjects.
A Lifelong Passion for Art
Adeana’s journey as an artist began in childhood. Growing up, art was her solace, especially as an only child. “Art was what kept me entertained being by myself in my room,” she shares with a warm smile. Encouragement came from both sides of her family; her dad and aunt were art teachers, fostering her talent from a young age. It wasn’t long before her skill was recognized by her kindergarten teacher, who was amazed by Berry’s keen eye for detail when she drew the hole in the back of a chair.
Her family’s support paved the way for her artistic endeavors, from summer art camps to focused studies in high school. She pursued her passion, culminating in her acceptance to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, where she studied graphic design. “I was teaching myself Photoshop, coding, and how to customize my MySpace profile,” Berry recalls, illustrating her early curiosity and self-drive.
From Atlanta Back to North Augusta
After graduating from SCAD, Berry spent over a decade in Atlanta, a city bursting with artistic inspiration and a rich music scene. Her love for color and music deeply influenced her artwork. As she painted portraits of hip-hop legends like Biggie Smalls and Tupac, interest in her work began to flourish.
But after her job was affected by the pandemic, Berry chose to return to her roots in North Augusta in 2021. Her move wasn’t just about personal comfort—she also wanted to support her parents. Since then, she has become actively involved in the local art community, joining the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council and volunteering at schools, inspiring the next generation.
A Voice for Change
One of Adeana’s significant projects came in 2020 when she painted two murals in Atlanta after the protests sparked by the tragic death of George Floyd. Collaborating with other artists, she turned boarded-up windows into powerful statements celebrating the lives of those lost to violence and injustice. “It was our way of turning something negative into something positive,” she reflects. This experience solidified her voice as an artist, helping her navigate her own feelings while contributing to her community’s healing.
Creating a Legacy
Now back in North Augusta, Berry is not only creating beautiful art but also becoming a mentor, particularly for young Black girls and women aspiring to be artists. “I feel like I’m a mentor, and it’s important for them to see successful Black women in art,” she emphasizes. She thrives on encouraging others, helping them to explore their creativity and follow their dreams.
As summer days linger and temperatures hover around a sweltering 95°F, Berry is busy in her studio, often completing a portrait in about a month to avoid burnout. “I can do it in a couple of days, but balance is key,” she explains, showcasing her dedication to both her craft and her health. And in the ever-evolving world of art, she is even exploring AI for inspiration, leveraging technology to enhance her creative process.
