New Flags and Medallions Unveiled at American Legion Post 26 in Aiken

Aiken, SC – The atmosphere was electric on November 9 as locals gathered at the American Legion Post 26 headquarters, just a stone’s throw from Citizens Park. The event was filled with camaraderie and respect, as veterans and community members came together to celebrate a significant upgrade to the facility: the installation of three new flagpoles and a service medallion wall honoring all branches of the military. The gathering generously coincided with the lead-up to Veterans Day, making it all the more meaningful.

Honoring Our Heroes

The highlight of the day included the dedication ceremony, which featured the retirement of an older flagpole, making way for the fresh display. Bill Szkromiuk, an Army veteran and a dedicated member of the Post, took the lead on this project. It was a heartwarming scene as flags were raised for the first time, representing not just the nation but also the sacrifices made by countless veterans over the years. Szkromiuk reflected on the project, saying, “I was sort of volunteered for it. The original flagpole was functional, but let’s face it, it wasn’t the prettiest.”

Community Support Shines Bright

During the event, the gathering included notable figures such as Sen. Tom Young, who spoke about the importance of remembering our veterans, stating, “The flag and our nation are what they are because of our veterans, every one of you here, and the hundreds of posts like this across the country.” His words resonated deeply with those in attendance, reminding everyone why such projects are paramount. It’s not just about flags; it’s about honoring the legacy of those who served.

The planning for the flagpole and medallion wall was no small feat. Starting with an initial donation of $100 from Szkromiuk, the project eventually grew into a community effort that raised nearly $6,900. This amount included $2,500 from the post itself, with the rest coming from donations and other community contributions. “The support we received was overwhelming,” Szkromiuk said, clearly proud of the outcome.

A Family Connection

Among the attendees was Joseph David Marvin Jr., a Marine veteran who had two tours in Vietnam. Marvin shared a touching story about his father, a World War II veteran, whose name is now etched on the medallion wall. “He was in the Army Combat Engineers, fought in North Africa, and landed on D-Day. We’re fortunate he came home,” he shared, encapsulating the essence of why the memorial is so significant.

A Symbol of Unity

The new flagpoles now proudly host the American flag, a POW/MIA banner, and an American Legion flag, representing both unity and remembrance. Local students from the Naval Junior ROTC programs at Silver Bluff and South Aiken High Schools played a vital role in the ceremony, participating in the flag retirement and honoring the past and present service members. Their involvement symbolizes a passing of the torch to younger generations.

A Legacy of Service

As attendees looked upon the newly dedicated flagpoles, it was evident that this project was more than just a construction endeavor; it was about instilling a sense of pride and remembrance in the community. As Szkromiuk put it, “This is probably the best thing I’ve done in my life.”

With the sun shining down and the flags waving gently in the breeze, it was a day that reminded everyone present of the strength and resilience of the Aiken community and its unwavering support for veterans. The new flagpoles and medallion wall at American Legion Post 26 will stand as a beacon of respect, honor, and patriotic spirit for many years to come.
