Hey, Aiken! There’s some buzz in the air, and it’s not just the chilly wind blowing through our lovely streets. The thermometer is displaying a cool 59°F today, with a forecast hinting at a drop to a brisk 31°F tonight. While we all bundle up against the winds from the West, we’ve got a much warmer news story to share that’s heating up our Southside!
That’s right! A renovation project is currently in progress at Hitchcock Plaza, which sits on the vibrant Southside of our city. Take a stroll by 243 Fabian Drive, and you’ll notice some serious activity going on. According to the City of Aiken paperwork plastered on-site, this renovation is titled a “Books-A-Million upfit.” How exciting is that?
Now, if you’re wondering what exactly that means, it’s essentially the transformation of this space into a brand new location for Aiken’s beloved bookstore chain. You might remember that the existing Books-A-Million has been cozying up in the Kalmia Plaza shopping center since 2022. But, does this mean they’re packing their bags and shifting to a new home? Well, that’s still under wraps!
We reached out to the manager of the Kalmia Plaza store for some clarification, but they remained tight-lipped, leaving us all wondering whether this new spot will be the new dawn for Books-A-Million in Aiken. Will they be bringing their collection of books, games, and gifts to the Southside? Or perhaps this renovation indicates a different strategy to grow the brand’s presence in the area? We can’t wait to find out!
For those of you not familiar with Books-A-Million, the company hails from Birmingham, Alabama, and boasts over 260 stores spread across more than 30 states and the District of Columbia. This well-loved bookstore has become a haven for readers and book lovers alike, so having a new location in our neighborhood would be a huge treat.
The construction work being done at Hitchcock Plaza is not just for any random shop. According to the City paperwork, it’s being spearheaded by Murray Construction of Birmingham, Mitchum Interior Inc. from Langley, and GreenWise Electrical Contractors LLC based in Georgia. So, as the workers roll up their sleeves, we can expect some professional craftsmanship to come to life right in the heart of Aiken.
While we’re all waiting to hear more about what’s happening and when the grand opening will take place, it’s a good time to reflect on the community’s love for literature and local businesses. A Books-A-Million would not only be a fabulous place to grab our favorite novels, but it could also become a gathering spot for book clubs and events—something we all can get behind!
So, keep your eyes peeled as the renovation rolls on. Whether you’re a devoted fan of this bookstore chain or just someone looking for a cozy spot to cuddle up with a book, this could be the news we’ve all been waiting for! Let’s stay hopeful and excited about what’s coming next in beautiful Aiken!
