Residents can look forward to various fun activities such as bounce houses, kickball games, and educational workshops.
In a twist of events that calls for community resilience, the friendly folks of North Augusta will have to wait a little longer for their highly anticipated National Night Out event. Originally set for Tuesday afternoon, the gathering is now rescheduled to take place on August 20 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Riverview Park Activity Center, conveniently located at 100 Riverview Park Drive.
So, what can attendees look forward to? A plethora of fun activities are on the agenda! Families can enjoy bounce houses that promise endless jumping joy, cool off with tasty snow cones, and engage in thrilling kickball games. Not to mention, a fire safety smoke trailer will be there to educate families on fire safety in a fun and engaging way! Little ones can also partake in a Home Depot kids workshop, where they can unleash their inner builders. And who could resist a splash in the dunk tank? There’s something for everyone!
Now, let’s delve a bit deeper into why this event is crucial for our community. National Night Out is an annual campaign celebrated all across the country to foster police-community partnerships and strengthen neighborhood camaraderie. Think of it as an opportunity for everyone to come together, meet the local law enforcement teams, and build genuine relationships with one another. It’s not just about the fun and games; it’s about cultivating trust and understanding within the community.
Unfortunately, the decision to postpone the event came in light of severe weather threats looming over the area. Following the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, it’s wise for residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Cleanup efforts are underway, and various agencies, including Aiken County Public Works and the South Carolina Department of Transportation, are busy clearing blocked roads. Keep in mind, many traffic signals may not be operational due to ongoing power outages, which means intersections without power should be treated as four-way stops.
Residents experiencing power outages can contact Dominion at 888-333-4465 or Aiken Electric Co-op at 877-264-5368. If you’re still without service, officials recommend switching off the main power box to aid the crews hard at work on restoring power lines. Speaking of assistance, for private property issues like tree removal, folks can call Crisis Cleanup at 844-965-1386.
On a positive note, Aiken’s yard debris collection program has temporarily lifted size restrictions, making it easier for residents to dispose of fallen trees and limbs. Just remember to cut debris into sections of six feet long or less for smoother collection.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health’s Careline is available at 855-472-3432 for anyone needing medical assistance, including oxygen. Plus, for those using candles at home, please remember to secure them in sturdy holders and never leave them unattended.
If you’re among those affected by the hurricane, the community shelter at Merriweather Elementary School is open, courtesy of the American Red Cross. Additionally, the New Holland Volunteer Fire Department is providing non-potable well water for residents in need of flushing toilets, while the Windsor Volunteer Fire/Rescue team is assisting horse owners with reliable water supplies.
With all this going on, residents are kindly asked to reserve 911 calls for emergencies only. For non-emergency situations, the 211 hotline is available.
So hang in there, North Augusta! Although you’ll have to wait a bit for National Night Out, the fun and vital opportunities for community connection are just around the corner!
