In a heartwarming turn of events, Augusta, Georgia, is seeing a glimmer of hope as The Master’s Table Soup Kitchen reopens its doors after being shuttered for nearly a week due to the impact of Hurricane Helene. With the Aiken location still closed, the Augusta site is fully staffed and ready to serve those in need during this challenging time.
Chef Nathanial Gates from Cucina 503 played a crucial role in getting the soup kitchen back on its feet. Despite having to close their own restaurant for at least three to four days, Chef Gates and his team chose to put their efforts into assisting The Master’s Table. “They were shut down here for at least 3 or 4 days, and those people went without, even this for those 4 days,” Chef Gates shared. “So, just getting it back up and running and getting the word out really, for anyone that needs a meal. It’s not just for the homeless; it’s for anyone who’s been displaced or just needs help right now.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the hurricane, volunteers have observed a significant increase in the number of people seeking meals. On one particular Friday, 188 individuals showed up for a hot meal, a staggering three times the regular attendance at the soup kitchen. Volunteer Ashlee Duren described the situation poignantly: “The whole city’s been devastated. So, people that normally have a place to go or have a hot meal find themselves in a situation where they might need the soup kitchen this week. We’re just happy to serve anybody and everybody.”
The Master’s Table is open daily from 11 a.m. to noon, and community members are encouraged to drop by for a meal. The team is eager to provide support and comfort not just to the homeless but to anyone facing difficulties during this time. “We always need volunteers; we have a lot of packing going on, and we have a lot of need in our rural areas,” stressed Shanelle Collins, Vice President of Human Resources. “Augusta is right here, so we see it. But we have a lot of communities outside of this in our service area that need a lot of help right now. A lot of our clients still don’t have electricity, still don’t have water, so we’re trying to get them some help.”
As the need for assistance continues to grow, community members who want to make a difference can get involved. Whether it’s distributing food, volunteering time, or making donations, every bit helps. Those interested in finding a distribution site nearby or wishing to offer their support can visit local community service websites for more information.
Meanwhile, the weather in Augusta is looking quite inviting. With a forecast of mainly sunny skies and a high reaching 88°F, it’s the perfect backdrop for a community coming together to help one another. Although there may be a few clouds and a slight chance of rain showers, residents are ready to embrace whatever comes next. The low tonight is set to be around 65°F, with gentle easterly winds blowing through at a comfortable speed of 5 to 10 mph.
As Augusta bounces back from the storm, the spirit of community resilience shines bright. Together, neighbors are working to ensure that no one goes hungry and that everyone has access to the support they need during this trying time. Let’s continue to rally together for one another, proving that when one part of our community hurts, we all feel it—and we all step up to help.
