Two local high school graduates, Jaylen Jordan and Ja’Kobe Williams, are making impressive debuts in NCAA Division II basketball. Jordan, playing for Flagler College, is averaging 18.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, while Williams, from Edward Waters College, averages 14.3 points and leads his team in steals. With their teams set to face each other soon, the excitement is palpable in Jacksonville as these young athletes continue to inspire local fans.
Jacksonville is buzzing with excitement as two talented local high school graduates have made their mark in the NCAA Division II basketball scene! Jaylen Jordan, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, is rocking the court at Flagler College, while Ja’Kobe Williams, standing tall at 6-foot-3, is shining as a senior guard at Edward Waters College. Both players are not just playing; they’re making headlines and proving to be key contributors for their respective teams right out of the gate this season.
Jordan, who graduated from Hilliard High School, is off to a sensational start this season, averaging 18.6 points and an impressive 12.2 rebounds per game in just his first three weeks. Talk about dominating! This young star has recorded double-doubles in each of the Saints’ first five games, showcasing his skills and tenacity on the court. In a recent matchup against Lynn, he made a significant impact by scoring 17 points in the second half, helping lead the Saints to a thrilling 104-85 victory. His shooting percentage for the season? A jaw-dropping 66.7%!
Not to be outdone, Williams, a proud graduate of Paxon High School, is also making his presence felt at Edward Waters College. Averaging 14.3 points per game and contributing around 7.1 rebounds, he’s quickly becoming a fan favorite. What’s more, he leads the Tigers in steals with an average of 1.7 per game, reflecting his defensive prowess. In a competitive game against South Carolina-Beaufort, he racked up 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, showing off his versatility as a player.
In a highly anticipated matchup, the two local athletes are set to face each other on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as Flagler College visits Edward Waters. This showdown is sure to bring fireworks, as both players strive to lead their teams to victory while showcasing the talent that originated right here in Jacksonville.
It’s not just Jordan and Williams who are hitting the sports scene hard! The Jacksonville University men’s basketball team is also in the mix, currently boasting a record of 3-2 after a thrilling victory over Virginia Tech. They will soon compete against Mercer, a familiar rival they’ve faced 55 times before, holding a favorable edge of 31-23 in their previous encounters.
The UNF Ospreys have been making waves as well, setting a Division I program record for assists in a game with an astounding 33 during a recent win over Edward Waters! Freshman Josh Harris is also stealing some of the spotlight, becoming the first freshman to accomplish a double-double since 2018 – talk about impressive!
Not every team has had the same success story lately, though. The Jacksonville Dolphins faced a tough defeat against Mississippi State, losing with a score of 80-35. Meanwhile, Trinity Baptist College continues to struggle, currently sitting at 0-6 after encountering a series of heavy losses, including a staggering 110-68 defeat against Florida A&M.
With local talents like Jordan and Williams lighting up the court, the basketball scene in Jacksonville is heating up.
