Lexington Man Arrested After Dramatic Patrol Vehicle Theft and Chase

On the evening of October 7, 2024, the city of Lexington found itself at the center of a shocking incident involving a stolen patrol vehicle and a dangerously high-speed chase that would eventually end in Aiken County. The man responsible, 22-year-old Kevin Romero, has since been charged with a series of serious offenses, including grand larceny and reckless driving.

A Routine Call Turns Intense

It all started when a deputy responded to a call about a civil dispute in the 3400 block of Augusta Road. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy encountered Romero holding a bat. After several commands from the officer, he ultimately dropped the bat but not before revealing a more concerning situation. Romero apparently had a knife in his pocket and, as detailed by Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, he continued to resist the deputy’s attempts to detain him.

“The deputy was able to get the knife out of Romero’s pocket and put it on the ground,” Koon stated. However, the struggle escalated as Romero disregarded commands and began to physically resist. In a tense moment, backup was called to the scene as the two struggled near the deputy’s patrol vehicle.

A Stolen Patrol Vehicle and a Dangerous Chase

As the incident unfolded, Romero managed to gain control of the situation by getting into the driver’s seat of the patrol car. Unfortunately for everyone involved, he then shifted the vehicle into drive and took off, which initiated a high-stakes pursuit. A good Samaritan, witnessing the chaos, jumped in to help the deputy, temporarily trailing Romero in their own vehicle.

Law enforcement officers quickly became involved in a coordinated effort to apprehend the fugitive. Patrol units pursued Romero as he sped toward Aiken County, navigating various highways. The chase reached a critical point on Interstate 20 near mile marker five, where the situation would take a dramatic turn.

The Chase Comes to an End

The officers deployed Stop Sticks to deflate the tires of the stolen vehicle. Romero’s reckless driving reached a fever pitch as he narrowly avoided a collision with an 18-wheeler, swerving dangerously close to the North Augusta patrol car. Ultimately, however, the chase ended when his vehicle collided with a guide wire in the median and struck a North Augusta patrol car, totaling it in the process.

Thankfully, the suspect only sustained minor injuries and was promptly treated by EMS at the scene. Authorities took him into custody immediately after the crash.

Future Consequences

After being arrested, Romero was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center, where he remains in custody. Sheriff Koon noted that more charges could be on the horizon as the investigation continues. The severity of the incident underscores the importance of respecting law enforcement commands and the potential consequences of reckless behavior.

Reflections on Local Safety

This dramatic event serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise in our communities and the absolute commitment of local law enforcement to keep us safe. As authorities investigate further, residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The hope is that the justice system will address Romero’s actions appropriately, ensuring accountability while keeping the community secure. For now, Lexington residents can find comfort in knowing that their dedicated officers are always on duty, ready to face unpredictable challenges head-on.
