This past weekend, the charming city of Aiken played host to an event that warmed the hearts of dog lovers and holiday enthusiasts alike—Santa’s Downtown Dog Dash. Held on December 14, the event brought together over 125 participants, many sporting festive Santa outfits while others brought their furry friends along for a leisurely stroll. The primary aim? To raise funds for the Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS), all while celebrating the local community.
Organized by Downtown Dog, located at 150 Laurens St. S.W., the race prompted excitement from both runners and walkers. “I have two passions: running and dogs,” explained Sheri Scarborough, who co-owns the store with her husband, Vic. This year, Sheri took the leap she had long desired—launching this lively event not just as a fundraiser but also to mark her store’s 10th anniversary.
As the sun shone brightly, but with a gentle chill in the air at 40 degrees, the atmosphere brimmed with energy. The course featured a one-mile walk and a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run, both set along the cozy roadways of Colleton Avenue, with The Alley serving as the start and finish line.
Before the race kicked off at 8 a.m., the air was filled with the joyous barks of excited dogs and the cheerful chatter of their owners. Some participants even jingled with bells adorning their dogs’ collars, creating a festive ambience. Adding to the merriment, members of the South Aiken High School band honor society played Christmas music, enhancing the experience for those gathered in The Alley.
Among the participants was Laura Shinn from Augusta, who completed the course in just over 23 minutes alongside her beloved rescue pup, Leia. “She’s a Cinderella story from the streets of South Carolina,” Laura shared, reflecting on Leia’s journey from a shelter in Columbia, S.C. to her forever home. “To me, she’s still a puppy,” she added with a grin.
Sheri expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming turnout and the support from local businesses. “We’ve just had amazing sponsors. All our neighbors downtown joined in with us, and it’s just been really great,” she said, enthusiasm spilling over her words. The love from the community made this festive occasion all the more special.
As the event wrapped up, Sheri took a moment to acknowledge the essential work done by FOTAS, stating, “I want to give a huge thank you for coming out and supporting FOTAS, who do a great job at the shelter.”
With a successful first year under their belt, the Scarboroughs are already dreaming about the next event. They hope to continue combining their love for dogs and running to benefit local animal rescue efforts. Perhaps next year will see even more participants, more dogs, and certainly, more holiday cheer.
For now, this heartwarming event showcased the spirit of Aiken—friendly faces, wagging tails, and a community united by a love for both animals and each other. As the weather shifts toward winter, the laughter, barks, and jingling from this special morning will surely be fondly remembered by all who attended.
