Aiken, South Carolina, is gearing up for an exciting election as one of its own, James Hankinson, a passionate community leader and local business owner, officially declares his candidacy for the District 8 seat on Aiken County Council. With a strong commitment to community service and an inspiring personal journey, Hankinson aims to bring positive change and a fresh perspective to the county council.
At 40 years old, Hankinson wears many hats: he is the ISS supervisor, a valued community leader, the head coach and co-owner of Hankinson Boxing Gym, and a devoted family man. Alongside his wife Brittany and their three children, Hankinson is also a proud grandfather to Armani. His life revolves around service and uplifting the youth in Aiken County.
When Hankinson and Brittany noticed a surge in gun violence among local youth in 2015, they knew they had to take action. Rather than letting frustration hold them back, they founded the nonprofit Hankinson Boxing Gym with the motto “Gloves Up, Guns Down.” The gym not only provides a safe space for young people to train and compete but also includes programs that assist with homework, Bible study, and personal development.
Hankinson takes immense pride in the success of their initiatives. To date, 100% of the young participants who completed the program have graduated high school. This past summer, they even had the honor of competing in the National Junior Olympics where five out of seven students brought home medals. This accomplishment speaks volumes about the positive impact that the gym has had on the community.
So, why is Hankinson throwing his hat into the political ring now? He believes it’s a calling. His commitment to District 8 stems from a deep love for his community and a desire to uplift those around him. Hankinson feels that the residents of District 8 deserve more than the empty promises they have received in recent years.
During a recent interview, he said, “We need basic needs taken care of. Fire hydrants, sidewalk repairs, safer streets—these are necessary for us to regain pride in our community.” His priorities include addressing essential infrastructure issues, such as improving roads and clearing storm drains, all while working to keep children engaged in positive activities.
Hankinson’s vision for bringing businesses and amenities to District 8 is equally ambitious. His plan is to actively involve constituents in discussions about their needs and desires for the area. “It’s crucial to consult with the people. Let’s find out what they want and what kind of businesses would thrive here,” he explained. By collaborating with other County Council members and developers, he seeks to make District 8 a hub for opportunity.
For individuals in District 8 who have always dreamed of starting their own businesses, Hankinson aims to connect them with resources like the Small Business Administration and local entrepreneurship programs. “Together, we can cultivate an environment where small businesses can flourish,” he added enthusiastically.
One unique aspect of Hankinson’s campaign is his artistic side. He has written a heartfelt poem that sums up his dedication to the community, expressing the struggles many face and the hope for a better future. His words resonate deeply: “I’m tired of things that’s supposed to change, Broken Promises, while things remain the same… Families first is the aspiration.” This passion underscores his commitment to uplifting those who feel marginalized or unheard.
As election season heats up, it’s clear that James Hankinson is not just a candidate but a dedicated servant of the community with a clear vision for what District 8 can become. With his unwavering belief in God and tireless work ethic, he hopes to inspire others to join him in creating a brighter future for Aiken.
As we look toward the upcoming election, it’s worth reflecting on the impact that community leaders like Hankinson can truly make when they put their hearts and souls into serving their neighbors.
