Beech Island, S.C. experienced a heart-wrenching tragedy as Hurricane Helene swept through the area, leaving devastation in its wake. The storm, which roared across the Southeastern U.S., has been linked to the untimely deaths of a beloved married couple, Jerry and Marcia Savage, both in their seventies. The couple’s story and the impact of their loss have touched community members and family alike.
Aged 78 and 74 respectively, Jerry and Marcia were discovered by their family members after a large tree crashed through the roof of their home. This traumatic event occurred in the midst of the hurricane’s chaos on September 27. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office reported that both were pronounced dead at the scene, a heartbreaking conclusion to a life spent together. John Savage, their grandson, shared a poignant detail: they were found hugging one another in their bed. He believes that it was somehow God’s plan for them to leave this world together—not experiencing the pain of losing one another.
The love story of Jerry and Marcia is one many dream of. Having been high school sweethearts, this couple shared an incredible bond that lasted over five decades. Their daughter, Tammy Estep, described their love as “immediate, and it was everlasting.” This sentiment resonates deeply with family and friends, who describe them as generous and humble individuals. A social media post shared by a relative reflected this, labeling them “two of the kindest and most generous people” she ever knew.
In the wake of this tragic loss, a GoFundMe account has been set up to assist the family with funeral expenses. “As many of you may know, Jerry and Marcia Savage were taken too soon during Hurricane Helene. I am raising funds to cover the costs of the funeral to lay them to rest,” read a statement from the fundraiser. Their loving family is left to cherish the memories of Jerry and Marcia, who are survived by two children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Unfortunately, the Savage couple wasn’t the only victims of the storm in Beech Island. Reports indicate that two more lives were lost due to similar circumstances. A 29-year-old man named Michael Roukous from Dexter, New York, died when a tree fell on the roof of the home he was renting. A 70-year-old man was also pronounced dead after suffering a similar fate. These tragic events are a reminder of the dangers posed by natural disasters; overall, more than 200 people lost their lives during Hurricane Helene’s rampage across multiple states.
In light of these tragedies, President Joe Biden has committed to visiting the hardest-hit areas, engaging with federal, state, and local officials. He plans to meet with first responders and hear stories directly from residents, small business owners, and farmers affected by the storm’s ferocity. This involvement is crucial to understanding the full scope of the disaster and providing the necessary support for recovery.
As Beech Island begins to pick up the pieces, the loss of Jerry and Marcia Savage will be felt not only by their family but by the wider community that admired them. Their legacy of love and kindness serves as a comforting reminder amidst the sorrow—a tribute to a life well-lived and a love everlasting.
