In the charming city of Aiken, a beloved holiday tradition is gearing up to make its festive comeback! Despite some whispers on social media about its potential cancellation, the Hoofbeats and Christmas Carols Parade is still set to bring joy to the community this December.
Aiken City Manager Stuart Bedenbaugh reassured residents after a recent meeting on September 9, stating, “No one has notified us formally that they’re canceling the parade.” This news is sure to lift the spirits of many in the community, especially after last year’s successful event, which included over 200 horses and 18 carriages, with a delightful wave from Santa Claus onboard.
And it’s not just chatter; Jim Rhodes, president of Equine Rescue of Aiken, expressed his confidence too. “It’s a go,” he said with enthusiasm. Both Bedenbaugh and Rhodes mentioned that crucial meetings would take place to finalize the parade logistics, involving key community figures such as Aiken County Council Vice Chairman Andrew Siders and public safety officials.
As the parade has grown over the years, some adjustments are likely on the horizon. Rhodes stated, “More than likely, it’s going to be on Sunday, the 15 of December at 2 p.m.” Although the route isn’t finalized just yet, there’s a commitment to ensuring that parade participants can enjoy the festivities safely along thoughtful paths that consider the needs of our downtown businesses.
As conveyed in a Facebook post from the parade’s organizing committee, efforts to address safety and logistics have been a priority over the past six months. The committee has worked closely with the Aiken Department of Public Safety to tackle various concerns, including traffic management and the parade’s impact on local businesses. The post highlighted that “there are a multitude of considerations that have been discussed in depth.“
It’s worth noting that as part of the parade’s evolution, Equine Rescue of Aiken and the SPCA Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare will take a more central role in managing the proceedings moving forward. Due to changes in the original organizing team, Rhodes explained that both organizations signed a memorandum of understanding to oversee the parade and ensure it remains a cherished Aiken event.
Last December’s parade raised an impressive $9,900 for local animal welfare efforts, showcasing the community’s big heart. With around 60 volunteers giving their time, we can expect even more participation this year. These past efforts have helped clarify that this isn’t just a festive occasion; it’s a crucial fundraiser supporting local charities.
City officials are keenly aware of the logistics involved in such a large event. Bedenbaugh noted that it’s important to balance the needs of the parade with those of local businesses and the wider community. “We have to ensure the safety of the entire community,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of thoughtful planning.
As we look forward to this year’s Hoofbeats and Christmas Carols Parade, the excitement in Aiken is palpable. With changes and preparations in place, plus a commitment to maintaining the tradition that has enchanted residents for over a decade, this year’s event promises to be a festive highlight. So mark your calendars for December 15, and get ready to celebrate the holiday season with dear friends, family, and, of course, Santa!
