Tragedy Strikes Augusta: Community Reels After 49th Homicide of the Year

Tragedy Strikes Augusta: Another Homicide in the Community

Augusta residents are waking up to a heartbreaking reality this week, as the city has recorded its 49th homicide of the year after a tragic shooting incident on Tuesday morning. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the details surrounding this latest case, but the overwhelming sense of loss is palpable among community members.

According to reports, officers received a call at approximately 11:22 a.m. regarding a shooting in the 1500 block of Picquet Avenue. When they arrived on the scene, they found a male lying in the street at the intersection of Picquet Avenue and Gordon Street. Sadly, the man was identified as 73-year-old James West. The coroner pronounced him dead at the scene just over 20 minutes later, at 11:43 a.m.

Seeking Justice

The investigation is currently underway, and authorities are taking quick action to find the person responsible for this tragic incident. Late on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office distributed a wanted flyer for Harold Leverett Jr., who is being sought for both murder and illegal weapon possession linked to West’s death. Law enforcement officials are urging the public to remain vigilant, cautioning that Leverett should be considered armed and dangerous.

If you have any information that could assist police, you’re encouraged to reach out to Investigator Tyler Steerman or any on-duty investigator with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at either (706) 821-1427 or (706) 821-1020. This call could make a difference in bringing some closure to the family and friends of the victim.

A Community in Mourning

The sorrow from this incident resonates throughout Augusta. This year alone, the city has seen a sharp rise in violent crimes, with the homicide count already surpassing the 38 homicides recorded in all of last year. With just four weeks left in the year, community leaders and residents are calling for action to prevent further violence that devastates families and friends.

James West, who lost his life in this shooting, is remembered as a cherished member of the Augusta community. Loved ones and friends are now in mourning, grappling with the loss of someone they deeply cared about. In honor of West, anyone with photos or cherished memories to share is encouraged to text them to 803-487-3224. This serves as a way to celebrate a life that was cut too short.

What’s Next for Augusta?

As Augusta faces the challenge of rising crime rates, local leaders, residents, and law enforcement agencies are urged to come together. Community initiatives, town hall meetings, and outreach programs may be necessary to bridge gaps and foster a safe environment. Everyone plays a part in creating change, and unity will be a key factor in helping the city overcome these difficult times.

Everyone in Augusta is encouraged to stay alert and informed. As these events unfold, let’s work together to build a stronger and safer community for all. The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining how residents can respond to this tragic situation and address the underlying issues that plague the city.

Remember, staying informed and vigilant is a shared responsibility. If you see something, say something! Every voice counts in the fight against crime.
