In a recent series of health inspections conducted in the past week, one Augusta restaurant was found guilty of having diluted soap in its sanitizing sink, amongst other health and safety violations.
Two local businesses found themselves on the receiving end of a failing grade, identified as a score below 70, after their health inspections between 21st and 28th June.
Holiday Inn Express located at 444 Broad St. represented one of the failing establishments with a score of 68. Inspectors noted less than 100 ppm (as measured in 50 ppm) in the sanitizer sink and discouraged dilution with tap water. The restaurant was also advised to acquire sanitizer test strips. Simultaneously, China City in 3128 Deans Bridge Road was caught with a score of 69, thanks to various hygiene violations, inclusive of exposing raw chicken to flies and storing it uncovered.
Additional directives from the inspectors referenced wider temperature control for food, public visibility of health certificates, availability of paper towels at hand wash sinks, and proper food storage mechanisms. Looking into thermometers with an accuracy of +/- 2F and fixing components for better cleanability were further actions emphasized.
Prioritizing health and safety in shared public spaces, the health department highlighted food businesses, indicating necessary corrective measures to maintain customer safety and compliance with local health policies. The department underlined correcting practices such as the use of sanitizing sinks, proper handwashing, efficient cold storage, and maintaining food contact surfaces, amongst numerous others.
While underscoring areas for improvement, the department also recognized several businesses for their efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment. Businesses in Richmond and Columbia counties passed their inspections conducted between 21 and 28 June with impressive scores of 100, reflecting zero health violations. These include popular franchises like Arby’s and Wendy’s and local businesses like The J. Renae Experience and Munchies Snacks.
The rigorous and regular health inspections by the Georgia Public Health Department are carried out to safeguard residents and visitors’ health and safety. Observing professional health and safety standards, these inspections underline the significance of maintaining high hygiene levels at food establishments for an overall healthier society.
