Savannah River Site Achieves Groundwater Remediation Milestone with 100 Million Gallons of Artesian Water Injected

Savannah River Site Hits Groundwater Remediation Target

August 23, 2024 – Savannah, South Carolina – Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) has announced a significant milestone in its efforts to clean up groundwater at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The organization has successfully injected more than 100 million gallons of artesian well water into a contaminated area, specifically under a former coal storage yard and its associated runoff basin.

Background on the Contamination

For over 60 years, a coal-fired power plant operated in the D Area of SRS, producing electricity and generating materials that ultimately impacted the surrounding groundwater. From its opening in 1952 until its closure in 2012, the plant faced challenges related to acidic materials and metals leaching from the coal stored on site. Even after the removal of coal several years ago, decades of rainwater had led to acidic conditions in the soil and shallow groundwater.

Innovative Solutions

To tackle this contaminated groundwater, SRNS has devised a unique solution. By utilizing two nearby artesian wells, the organization has implemented a system that does not require electricity or pumps. Instead, this innovative groundwater remediation approach relies on the natural flow of artesian well water. Ashley Shull, a senior scientist on the project, explained, “100 million gallons is nine times more water than contained in the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.” The project aims to neutralize the acidic conditions in the groundwater, which have persisted due to the long history of coal storage.

This method also offers a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative compared to traditional remediation technologies. Shull highlighted the advantages of the system, stating, “This system passively ensures a neutral buffering to groundwater.” The technology can save millions, prioritizing an eco-friendly approach that aligns with current environmental best practices.

Partnerships and Future Steps

The SRNS team has been working closely with regulators from the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to monitor the progress of this initiative. They began injecting artesian well water into the affected groundwater back in March 2022. The results will take time, as the natural processes require patience to restore the groundwater to its pre-industrial state.

Michael D. Budney, the Manager at U.S. Department of Energy-Savannah River, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s passive methodology, emphasizing that “tapping into the natural benefits” of artesian wells represents a sustainable choice for improving groundwater quality.

Acknowledgements

Rasheed Muwwakkil, a senior project engineer, recognized the dedication of the entire team involved in this project. He mentioned the importance of teamwork and communication with regulatory bodies to achieve this major milestone, stating, “This is truly a great and historic accomplishment to be proud of.”
