In a significant move towards sustainability, Vision RNG has established a long-term agreement to purchase raw landfill gas from the Greenwood County landfill. This partnership is poised to have a lasting impact, with the agreement potentially extending up to 25 years.
Landfill gas (LFG) is a natural byproduct generated from the decomposition of organic materials in landfills. It primarily consists of methane and carbon dioxide. As part of regulatory requirements, landfill gas is usually collected and flared, a process that burns off the methane. However, Vision RNG aims to take a different approach by capturing and converting this methane into a cleaner, renewable fuel.
Over the next year, Vision RNG will collaborate closely with Greenwood County and landfill personnel. Their objective will be to enhance the existing gas collection and control system. By optimizing this system, they will ascertain the volume of gas available for conversion. This assessment will guide the direction of the project—whether it will focus on producing Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) or on generating power for local distribution.
If the decision leans towards generating RNG, the produced fuel will be offered to various customers across the U.S. for use as transportation energy and other sustainable applications. Alternatively, if the project gravitates toward power production, the generated energy will be sold directly to the local grid operator.
Vision RNG’s CEO, Bill Johnson, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to be partnered with Greenwood County on this project. As our portfolio of landfill gas projects continues to expand, we are making a real impact on reducing methane emissions, capturing that wasted greenhouse gas, and putting it to good use.”
Greenwood County Council Chairman Chuck Moates echoed Johnson’s sentiments. He noted, “Greenwood County is proud to partner with Vision RNG on this long-term agreement. By capturing methane from our landfill and converting it into renewable energy, we are taking meaningful action that makes sense both environmentally and economically. We look forward to seeing the positive effects of this project for many years to come.”
Vision RNG is recognized as a leader in developing facilities that convert landfill gas into renewable natural gas. Backed by Vision Ridge Partners, the organization has assembled a team of industry experts dedicated to maximizing the benefits of landfill gas projects. They focus not only on the landfill operations but also on how this captured energy can benefit their partners and the community.
The agreement between Vision RNG and Greenwood County marks a pivotal step towards a greener future. By harnessing the natural energy potential of landfill gas, both entities are positioning themselves at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives, paving the way for energetic and sustainable growth in the region.
