Graniteville is shining brightly with community spirit! On October 4, volunteers from Horse Creek Academy brought smiles and filled bellies by giving away free lunches at the Aiken County Family YMCA. With a forecast promising abundant sunshine and warm temperatures reaching 83°F, it was the perfect day for this heartwarming initiative.
As the clock struck 10:30 a.m., the scene at the YMCA became bustling with excitement. Students from Horse Creek Academy were stationed near the entrance, waving hand-lettered signs that proclaimed “Free Lunches” and “Turn here!” to drivers passing by. The cheerful atmosphere was contagious as many eagerly pulled into the parking lot to grab a meal.
Within just an hour, the team had handed out around 150 lunches. “We had things ready,” shared Karen Nelson, an eighth-grade English teacher at the academy who played a pivotal role in organizing the event. The initiative was a community effort, and everyone was delighted to contribute in any way they could.
Dr. Ann Marie Taylor, the lead learner at Horse Creek Academy, emphasized the importance of giving back. “We were going to do it at the school, but decided to bring it to the Y because many people were already coming here for showers and to charge their devices,” she explained. The goal was simple: “We want to give people some relief, even if it’s just for five minutes of normalcy.”
Students helped assemble meals that included a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, juice boxes, granola bars, fruit cups, gummy candies, and chips. For those with different dietary needs, a nut-free version was also available. Every meal was packed with care and compassion!
The YMCA’s Executive Director, Samantha Whittaker, expressed her admiration for everyone involved. “It’s inspiring to see people who recognize a need and step in to meet it,” she said. The YMCA has remained a central hub for the community—many staff members were still without power at home but came together to serve their neighbors.
“We’ve kept our doors open for hot showers, charging stations, hot coffee, food, and water,” Whittaker noted, highlighting the tremendous effort of the YMCA staff. Even a lineman who happened to be in town stopped by to drop off food for locals. It truly showcased the unity of this community!
The outreach didn’t stop there! Faculty and staff from USC Aiken joined the effort, eager to lend a helping hand. Dr. Forrest Anderson, the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, noted the willingness of the staff to serve their community in any way possible. “It was a great opportunity for us to volunteer at the YMCA,” he shared, emphasizing the connection between the academy and the university.
This collaborative spirit extended further, with members from Fearless Church volunteering to check in guests for Wi-Fi, charging, and shower services. They were also vital in distributing diapers and wipes, making a significant impact on those affected by the recent storm.
As the day progressed, thoughts were also turning towards the future. Horse Creek Academy’s power had just been restored, and excitement was in the air for students and teachers alike as they prepared to head back to school on Monday. Dr. Taylor shared her relief, “We missed school all last week, so we are very excited to start back on Monday.”
Even with the struggles that the community faced in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene, it was heartening to see everyone come together. From families to students, teachers to local organizations, Graniteville’s resilience shone bright on that sunny day. Together, they turned challenges into opportunities to help one another, proving that a little support can go a long way. Here’s to many more community efforts like this one!
