Generous Spirits Shine Bright in Aiken This Holiday Season
Aiken is bursting with festive cheer this December, as local organizations come together to spread joy and goodwill to families in need. With a sunny high of 53°F and a crisp low around 30°F, the weather may be brisk, but the spirit of giving is definitely warming hearts across the community.
A Partnership for Cheer
At the center of this heartwarming initiative is a collaboration between the Salvation Army and the Marine Corps League, which has been working tirelessly to gather donations for hundreds of Aiken-area families. On December 10, Captains Michael and Malaika Good from the Salvation Army teamed up with Joel Williams from the Marine Corps League to coordinate the distribution of toys and gifts.
Joel Williams, a retired Marine and leader of the local Toys for Tots program, has been in the thick of things, overseeing the collection of a whopping amount of donated goodies, including bicycles, toys, and seasonal treats. The duo’s efforts come together in what Capt. Michael Good describes as a “symbiotic relationship”—helping many families experience a brighter holiday season.
Collecting Joy
The behind-the-scenes action is nothing short of remarkable. Over the past few weeks, volunteers have been rallying around the community to sort and categorize mountains of donations at the Christmas Cheer Center. Despite facing challenges, including finding an appropriate space to house the donations—a warehouse big enough to fit several basketball courts—the team has managed to create a bustling hub of seasonal giving.
This year, the Angel Tree Program is aiming to assist about 1,200 families across Aiken, Allendale, Edgefield, and Barnwell counties. “We’re striving to expand our reach,” Capt. Michael Good shared, highlighting the ongoing effort to ensure that every child in need has a happy holiday.
The Call for Volunteers
Like many community initiatives, securing volunteers has proven challenging. Despite these obstacles, Joel Williams echoed a determined sentiment, saying, “We’re getting it done.” In fact, their efforts include organizing and categorizing thousands of toys, thanks in part to donations from employees at the local Savannah River Site, who provided over 2,280 toys, including about 100 bicycles—amazing contributions that help make a difference.
Spreading Happiness
What’s on the gift list this year? In addition to the wonderful bicycles, the donations include books, creative activities like coloring books and crayons, and of course, toys. Each child typically receives a bundle of six or seven items, designed to bring not just gifts, but smiles to their faces.
Quentarius Ross, a new employee at the Salvation Army, has been working around the clock to bring joy to families. With workdays spanning from early morning until midnight, he describes the experience as “long but rewarding.” The satisfaction of seeing the joy on the children’s faces when gifting them their surprise toys is what keeps everyone motivated. “When the families come and actually get to receive their toys,” he states, “just giving them the toys for their kids and seeing the look on their faces—that’s the best part.”
