Augusta, Georgia—In a vibrant atmosphere filled with optimism and anticipation, Paine College hosted its Fall Convocation this past Friday, marking the beginning of a new academic year. This year’s convocation was more than just a welcome back; it was a heartfelt celebration highlighting the many exciting changes coming to the historically Black college.
As students and faculty gathered, the air buzzed with energy and the promise of a fresh start. This year, Paine College is not just welcoming returning students but also adjusting to the impending retirement of their long-serving president, Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, who has dedicated over 30 years to the institution. School leaders announced that a new president would be appointed by November 1st, paving the way for new leadership and renewed vision.
During the event, Dr. Jones emphasized the critical role that alumni and community donations play in supporting students. “If a student can get a scholarship that helps fund the cost of their education, that means a lot to them and their families,” she remarked. Her words echoed the sentiment of many in attendance, reminding everyone of the importance of community support.
To further engage with the community, Paine College organized a voter registration drive, a spirited president’s cookout, and a unique suit & tie giveaway to help prepare male students for their future careers. The focus was on not just education, but also on equipping students with the necessary tools to succeed in the workforce.
Heartfelt stories shared by attendees highlighted the strong bonds alumni feel towards their alma mater. Latashia Hooks, one of the founders of Alumni Gives Back, expressed her joy in giving back to the institution that shaped her. “It’s very heartwarming when you can give back to the same institution that poured into us,” she said radiating pride. Her sentiment was echoed by fellow alumnus Breyanna Johnson, who shared, “It’s easy to give back to the place that helped mold me into the professional I am today.” This spirit of generosity truly reflects the essence of community and support at Paine College.
During the convocation, a generous $20,000 donation was announced, aimed at boosting scholarships and supporting the college’s development initiatives. Excitingly, some of these funds will contribute to improving outdoor spaces on campus, such as introducing new gazebos and creating a picnic area. “We’ll be able to get out and interact because right now our place is on the quad and we don’t really have shade area so that will be nice for us,” shared junior student, Kaniyah Robertson, highlighting the positive changes ahead.
Dr. Jones’s impact on Paine College is undeniable. As she prepares for retirement, she will remain active as a board member until her successor is appointed, ensuring that her legacy continues to shape the institution. The college community is filled with gratitude for her leadership, as students and faculty alike look forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead.
As the sun shone brightly over Augusta, with a warm high of 86°F and clear skies, the positive energy at Paine College was palpable. The ENE winds rustled through the trees, symbolizing the gentle changes taking place within the campus community. The Fall Convocation was a perfect reminder that tradition and community go hand in hand as Paine College steps confidently into a future filled with promise and new beginnings.
