Aiken, S.C. has been buzzing with excitement as the results of a special election have rolled in! Liz Morris has officially clinched the coveted District 6 seat on the Aiken County Board of Education, much to the delight of her supporters.
On Tuesday, voters came out to cast their ballots, and Liz Morris emerged victorious with a fabulous 321 votes, accounting for approximately 58.7% of the total votes. Her opponent, James “Jim” Oremus, garnered 225 votes, which translates to around 41.1% of the vote. This brought the total turnout to a modest 546 voters, or roughly 4.45% of Aiken County’s registered voters in District 6, according to Dana Burden, the Director of the Aiken County Board of Voter Registration and Elections.
Now, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane! The seat that Morris now occupies was previously held by Dwight Smith, who decided to resign earlier this year, with his resignation taking effect on August 11, 2024. Smith had dedicated over 40 years to the Aiken County School System, serving in numerous roles including teacher, coach, and principal, and most recently as vice chairman of the school board. His term was originally set to run until November 2026, but as they say, all good things must come to an end!
So, what does this election mean for the community? The school board representative for District 6 plays a crucial role in making decisions that impact students, parents, and community members associated with several schools. These schools include Byrd Elementary, Clearwater Elementary, Gloverville Elementary, Graniteville Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, Warrenville Elementary, Highland Springs Middle, Langley Bath Clearwater Middle, Leavelle McCampbell Middle, and Midland Valley High School. That’s quite a few young minds that Liz will now help guide!
It’s worth mentioning that Morris had the glowing endorsement from former Aiken County Board of Education member and past chair Rosemary English. This backing undoubtedly helped propel her to victory, showcasing the trust and support she has within the community.
As Liz Morris steps into her new role, the future looks bright for many families and students in Aiken. With fresh ideas and a commitment to education, she’s poised to make a difference for those in District 6. The community is eager to see how she’ll tackle the challenges ahead and help foster a positive educational environment.
In a world where local elections can sometimes feel overshadowed, the triumph of Liz Morris reminds us of the power of community engagement and the impact dedicated individuals can have. This special election is a win for Aiken, S.C. and sets the stage for exciting developments in the educational landscape!
