Hey there, Augusta! Get ready to mark your calendars because the 39th Annual SEED STEM Festival is just around the corner. This fantastic event will take place on Saturday, October 26th, at the beautiful USC-Aiken campus. If you love science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—or know someone who does—this is definitely not something you want to miss!
The festival promises to be an exciting day filled with over 60 interactive exhibits that everyone in the family can enjoy. John Hutchens, the Director of Special Programs at USC-Aiken’s Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, shares that they truly want visitors to engage with the exhibits. “We pride ourselves on inviting people to come to it,” he says. “They have to do something interactive. So it’s not just an informational booth. It’s something the kids can come and the families can, you know, do something hands-on.”
Prepare to dive into a world of fascinating topics. You can explore robotics, learn about nuclear power, take a look at aviation, and even discover the wonders of biodiversity. With so many different exhibits, you won’t run out of things to see and do. “We have over 63 exhibits all ranging from all the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” Hutchens explains. “So, you know, you can learn about honeybees, travel through outer space in the planetarium, and explore all sorts of things.”
Speaking of honeybees, that’s another wonderful highlight of the festival! The Aiken Beekeepers Association will be showcasing their knowledge and passion for these crucial little creatures and their role in our environment. And yes, there’s a good chance you might see some bees buzzing around, as they’ll be setting up outside just in case they get a little adventurous!
If artifacts and ancient history pique your interest, you’ll be thrilled to hear that there will be not one, but two archaeology exhibits. One will come from Savannah River Site, while the other is provided by environmental services. You’ll have the chance to learn about archaeology and perhaps even dig into some fascinating discoveries.
It takes a village to put on an event this grand, and local organizations are stepping up in a big way. The Aiken Public School District is the main presenting sponsor, but there are many others supporting the festival, including Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, River National Lab, and the Generac Foundation. Local companies like SRP Credit Union, Kimberly Clark, and Southern Company have also joined in as sponsors, making this festival a true community effort!
For those wondering about the festival’s layout, it’s spread out across the entire USC-Aiken campus. You can visit the exhibits in various locations, including the Ruth Patrick Center, the science building, the student activities center, and even outside in the quad area. It’s an adventure just navigating the campus while engaging with all the fun activities!
