While there are currently three copper smelting operations in the United States—all located in Arizona and Utah—that focus on smelting copper that comes directly from mining, the Augusta facility is taking a different approach. By focusing on secondary smelting, it will recycle scrap metal sourced from everyday items like piping, motors, and electronics. In essence, this plant is re-engineering waste into new, usable materials.

When Aurubis first announced its plans for Augusta in November 2021, the initial development outline was much smaller, with a budget of only $340 million and an expectation to create about 125 jobs. However, as the interest and potential grew, so did the investment, with the figure rising to nearly $700 million.
