Exciting Election Ahead in Aiken!

Hey there, Aiken residents! As we find ourselves stepping into the season of change, it’s not just the weather that’s turning a bit chilly—it’s also the excitement leading up to the general election on November 5. With polls opening bright and early at 7 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m., it’s time to gear up for a day that could shape our future.

What’s on the Ballot?

First up is the highly anticipated presidential race! This year, voters have a chance to make their voice heard in the contest featuring Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump representing the Republican Party, and a handful of third-party candidates vying for attention. It’s going to be a hot topic around the dinner table, isn’t it?

As we move down the ballot, Aiken and Barnwell counties will have their eyes on the U.S. House races. Incumbent Republican Joe Wilson will be facing off against Democratic challenger David Robinson. In nearby Edgefield County, voters will have a choice between Democrat Byron Best, Republican Sherri Biggs, and a third-party candidate. It’s a chance to support the candidates you believe in!

State Senate and House Races

Next up, voters will be casting their ballots in the South Carolina Senate races. In most of Aiken County, the focus will be on Senate District 24, where Republican incumbent Tom Young Jr. is up against Democratic challenger Dee Elder. Meanwhile, folks in Eastern Aiken County will pick between Democratic incumbent Brad Hutto and Republican challenger Sharon Carter. Exciting choices ahead!

As for the South Carolina House of Representatives, Aiken County is divided among five districts, meaning there’s quite a bit of local variety! For instance, voters in Aiken’s Southside will choose between Republican Charlie Hartz and Democrat Jensen Jennings, while in the Northside and parts of Saluda County, Democratic incumbent Bill Clyburn faces Republican Suzy Spurgeon.

County and School Board Races

On the county level, although many races are uncontested, a couple are heating up. The sheriff’s race features Republican Marty Sawyer against Democrat Lucas Grant. Plus, the County Council District 8 race has incumbent P.K. Hightower contested by Republican challenger James Hankinson. Don’t forget the school board races too—only one is contested, between incumbent Dr. John Bradley and challenger Melanie Pniewski.

Referendums on the Ballot

Adding even more to your decision-making, all South Carolina voters will have four questions on their ballot. These include some crucial state amendments and local referendums regarding taxes and funding for education. So, it’s not just about choosing candidates; you’ll be making important choices for your community!

Don’t Miss Out!

Remember, even if you’re in line when the clock strikes 7 p.m., you’re still able to cast your vote! It’s essential to make sure your voice is heard. For those unsure where to go on election day, Aiken County has 89 precincts set up to accommodate voters. You can find your designated location on your voter registration card or by visiting SCVotes.gov.

The Big Day is Here!

As we await election results, it’s a great time to engage in conversations with fellow community members about their thoughts and choices. Keep an eye open on SCVotes.gov and local channels for results to be posted Tuesday evening. And if you’d rather have something in hand, the results will also be in the Thursday edition of your local paper!

So, Aiken, are you ready to dive into the election process? Mark your calendars, know your choices, and let’s make this a great election together!
