Exciting Changes at Paine College This Year
Located in the heart of Augusta, Paine College is embracing a year of significant transformation. Last Friday, the college kicked off the academic season with its Fall Convocation, an event that not only welcomed new and returning students but also celebrated the spirit of change that the institution is experiencing.
A Fresh Start for Students
As students gathered for the convocation, it was clear that this year would be different. New friendships and mentorship opportunities were being created, setting the tone for a supportive academic environment. Students were introduced to faculty members, fostering a sense of community right from the get-go. Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, the president of Paine College, spoke passionately about the importance of making education accessible through scholarships.
“So, if a student can get a scholarship that helps fund the cost of their education, that means a lot to them and their families,” Dr. Jones explained. Her enthusiasm was infectious, allowing everyone present to feel a part of something bigger. With the involvement of alumni and supporters, the school looks forward to making educational experiences more affordable for all its students.
Alumni Giving Back
Paine College has always enjoyed a strong relationship with its alumni, and the convocation showcased that spirit of giving back. Latashia Hooks, one of the founders of Alumni Gives Back, expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards the institution. “It’s very heartwarming when you can give back to the same institution that poured into us,” she shared. This sense of community cannot be overstated: alumni are eager to help current students navigate their educational journeys, providing essential resources and mentorship.
Fellow alumna Breyanna Johnson echoed this sentiment, stating, “Yeah, it’s easy to give back to the place that helped mold me into the professional I am today.” The strong foundations built at Paine College enable its graduates to succeed, prompting many of them to contribute to the college’s growth whenever they can.
Investments in the Future
Another highlight of the day was the announcement of a generous donation of $20,000, which is set to boost the college’s scholarship fund. This money will also go towards development projects on campus, specifically to create more inviting outdoor spaces. Students expressed their excitement about this upcoming change, particularly for a new gazebo and picnic area that will provide much-needed shade.
“We’ll be able to get out and interact because right now our place is on the quad and we don’t really have shade,” said Kaniyah Robertson, a junior at Paine College. Students like Kaniyah appreciate the support from alumni and community members and are eager for these enhancements to enhance their daily experiences on campus.
Looking Ahead
As we look towards the future, Paine College is not only seeing change from the outside but is also bracing for important transitions within its leadership. Dr. Jones has been with the college for over 30 years and is set to retire soon. She will remain on the board until a new president is appointed, which is expected to happen by November 1st. This upcoming change has the community buzzing with curiosity and excitement.
Dr. Jones emphasized the impact of community support, not just for the college’s success but for the personal growth of its students. “Just knowing that somebody thinks of us and has a special place in their hearts,” Kaniyah shared, sums up the feelings of many at this year’s convocation.
