Excitement Builds in Augusta as Arts in the Heart Festival Approaches

Excitement Builds in Augusta for the Annual Arts in the Heart Festival

Augusta, Georgia, is buzzing with excitement as the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival gears up to kick off this Friday! The heart of downtown Augusta will transform into an artistic haven, showcasing local talents and big-name headliners. Set-up began early Tuesday morning at the Augusta Common, and all signs point to another fantastic year for this beloved community event.

A Star-Studded Lineup Awaits

Thanks to a special tourism grant, this year’s festival is set to bring some serious star power. The Greater Arts of Augusta Council has announced that Grammy-nominated jazz artist, Georgia Muldrow, will take the stage on Friday at 7 p.m. Her album “Overload” received a Grammy nod in 2020, promising a captivating performance for attendees.

But that’s not all! The vibrant Fastball, a platinum-selling alternative-rock band from Austin, will perform their chart-topping hits like “The Way” and “Out Of My Head” on the Global Stage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. They’re a crowd favorite, and their presence is sure to make this year’s festival even more memorable.

A Hub of Creativity and Community

Mark Albertin, a professional photographer and documentary producer who has been a key part of Augusta’s art scene for years, expressed his enthusiasm: “People don’t realize we have a huge art community here. We have potters, painters, dancers, musicians, and so much more! With the Arts in the Heart festival, we have a chance to really appreciate our local arts.” His excitement is infectious, and you can just feel the vibrant energy he describes.

Jennifer Bowen, vice president of Destination Development and Community Engagement at Destination Augusta, added her thoughts on the festival’s significance: “This event has been going on for decades, and it just continues to grow. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase our local arts community and cultural diversity. It’s a fantastic way to highlight the best of Augusta!”

Community Impact and Anticipation

With expectations of more than 100,000 visitors this weekend, the economic impact is significant. The festival typically generates over a million dollars, and this year, it’s projected to bring in around $1.6 million directly to the local economy. “It’s mainly the locals who come down to spend their money and enjoy what we have to offer,” Bowen noted.

Albertin reminisces about the enticing atmosphere: “You come here, and the smells are everywhere. You walk around and think, ‘What is that cooking? I have to try it!’ It truly captures the essence of downtown Augusta and draws people in to discover local businesses.”

Entertainment Galore

This year promises a fabulous lineup of entertainment spread across five stages featuring genres from hip-hop to jazz to rock. Additionally, Augusta has been recognized as a “Music City”, further emphasizing the vibrant musical culture present. And for families, there’s a large area packed with interactive activities, street performers, public art displays, and a young artists market.

Notably, Atlanta puppeteer Lee “That Puppet Guy” Bryan will be performing on the Family Stage, bringing smiles and laughs to kids and adults alike. Artzilla will also be making a comeback, with local artists painting live throughout the weekend—a true treat for art enthusiasts!

Preparation and Access

As the countdown progresses, the city is gearing up for the influx of visitors. The authors’ lounge, featuring Georgia authors and book signings, also returns this year, adding a literary twist to the festivities.

For those keen on attending, advance festival badges are available online for $15. Children aged ten and under get in free, making it a family-friendly event. At the gate, the badges will be priced at $20, and attendees can bring their lawn chairs—though pets and coolers are not allowed.

With everything set, Augusta is ready to welcome art lovers, families, and music enthusiasts for a weekend filled with creativity, culture, and community spirit. Whether you’re an art connoisseur or just looking to enjoy the lively atmosphere, the Arts in the Heart festival promises something for everyone!
