In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk has emerged as the sole financial backer of a political action committee named after the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The PAC, known as the RBG Pac, received a hefty donation of $20.5 million from Musk in the final weeks leading up to the presidential election. Federal campaign finance reports released last Thursday revealed the full extent of this funding, highlighting Musk’s significant influence on the political landscape.
The RBG Pac has been actively running advertisements and mailers that attempt to portray an alliance between then-candidate Donald Trump and Ginsburg, particularly focusing on the highly contentious issue of abortion. However, this framing has faced sharp criticism from Ginsburg’s family. Her granddaughter, Clara Spera, publicly labeled the PAC’s use of Ginsburg’s name and image as “appalling” and fundamentally misleading. She highlighted that the suggestion Ginsburg would approve of Trump’s abortion stance was a gross misrepresentation.
The PAC’s website featured provocative statements, including a side-by-side image of Trump and Ginsburg with the caption, “Great Minds Think Alike,” a sentiment that contradicts Ginsburg’s well-known judicial beliefs. The group posed a question on the site, asking, “Why did Ruth Bader Ginsburg agree with Donald Trump’s position on abortion?” However, it misleadingly suggested Ginsburg favored limited government intervention regarding abortion laws, possibly ignoring her established opposition to Trump altogether.
The ads aimed to counter the Democratic narrative which had been accusing Trump of wanting a federal abortion ban. While Trump himself claimed during the campaign that he did not support a federal ban, many were skeptical that he would resist pressure from conservative factions once in office.
Clara Spera also shared details about her grandmother’s dying wish, which was reportedly to not have her seat filled until a new president was sworn in following her death in September 2020. This request was ultimately disregarded when Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett, contributing to the conservative majority that later overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate surrounding abortion rights.
Elon Musk’s financial involvement did not stop with the RBG Pac. His overall political spending during this election cycle has skyrocketed to over $260 million. A sizable portion was funneled into another PAC named America Pac, which raised around $252 million. Musk also engaged in high-profile campaign appearances and voter outreach, including controversial $1 million giveaways in key swing states.
Additionally, Musk financially supported a Super PAC linked to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with a contribution of $3 million and directed nearly $1 million to Trump’s campaign committee directly.
With Trump’s victory in the election, Musk is now in a prime position to influence the new administration. It has been announced that he will co-lead a new government initiative titled “Department of Government Efficiency” alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate. This department’s mission will be to cut down on federal bureaucracy and streamline operations.
As the political landscape continues to shift, Musk’s role and the implications of his substantial contributions will likely remain a focal point of discussion among both political observers and the general public.
